“Oh, hello! I didn’t see you—I thought Claire was alone.” Luis considered the pair in the car, seated close together, looking shocked. He cleared his throat. “Um. I’ll just wait for you inside.” With that he closed the door and left them alone. Claire looked back at Bump, feeling completely bewildered. Now what? “Nothing like a ruined moment, is there?” His hand still held her arm in its gentle grasp.

He ran his fingers up and down one more time before releasing her completely. “Will you indulge me another time?” he asked, his face serious. She released a shaky breath and nodded, swallowing her disap- pointment. Why not now? she wanted to ask, but decided her pride had been battered enough for one day. “Are you the type who has to pick his moments?”

she asked on a whisper. His eyes wandered from her eyes to her lips, and she wondered if he were going to change his mind. “Yeah,” he murmured, “although now I’m wondering if I should just take them when I can get them.” A family with young children ran by the jeep, the little ones squealing with laughter as they passed. Claire blinked, and looked beyond Bump’s shoulder at the people filing into the building.

“I suppose we should go in,” she murmured, a light frown creasing her brow. “Yes, | suppose we should.” At that, he opened his door and was out of the jeep and around to her side before her brain could suggest to her limbs that they ought to be moving. He opened her door and offered her his hand. He grinned at her confusion. It was enough to have her shaking herself mentally and pulling herself together.

“Just because my synapses aren’t firing is no reason to be smug,” she told him as she took his hand and rose, shutting the car door behind her and locking it. “You should have taken your moment when you had it. Who knows when you’ll get another one of those.”

She softened her flippancy with a wink. It took every effort she could manage to be blasé. “Oh, I make my moments, Dr. O’Brian. There’ll be others.” A Time for the Heart Hmm. Now there was something a girl couldn’t very well complain about. Unfortunately, her tongue was stuck to the roof of her mouth, and any witty response she might have come up with in a less-charged setting was sadly absent.

He was looking down into her face, the smile on his lips making its way into his eyes. “Now then,” he said, tucking her arm into his. “Shall we go to church?” Once inside, Bump and Claire were greeted by Luis and a woman standing close to him who Bump assumed must be Maria, his wife.

A young child clung to his mother’s hand.

Ss / The young woman carried the small basket of fruit into her queen and set it before her, curtseying as she did so. “Thank you, Queliza,” the queen murmured, smiling at the young servant. She was seated upon her ornate throne in her personal quarters in the spacious palace, which was positioned to the right of the ceremonial temple. Queliza liked the new queen. The kings first wife had been thought- less and demanding.

After her death, the king had chosen for his bride a young woman from a neighboring city. The new queen was young and kind, and treated her servants well. “That is all I will need for now,” the queen said. “T will have you summoned should I require something further.”

Queliza curtseyed again and quietly left the room, her heart giving a little leap of excitement. She had some time to herself! Perhaps, if she wandered around the plaza a bit, she might spy the object of her recent affections… kK OK OK OK Ok laire O’Brian viewed the empty spot on the shelf with some- thing akin to dismay. She was either losing her mind, not alto- gether a far-fetched possibility, she wryly admitted, or someone had moved the artifact without her knowledge or authorization.

Surveying the room, she looked carefully over each possible hiding place before turning again to the shelf where she’d last placed the ancient pottery bowl that had been unearthed and documented the day before. 2 NANCY CAMPBELL ALLEN A pesky, pulsating ache that began behind her eyes gave Claire the promise of more intense pain to follow.
