Hold on. Keep the doors locked.” I tried to protest. “Vic… where—?” “Don’t move.” Her voice was sharper now, the edge in it slicing through my grogginess. No room for debate. The door slammed behind her. Then she was gone, striding back toward the bar like a storm in motion. I caught one last glimpse of her hoodie vanishing into the crowd before the exhaustion dragged me under again.

Slamming of the car door woke me up, and ragged breathing filled the car. My eyes fluttered open. She was back. The glow of the streetlamp caught her face—jaw tight, nostrils flaring, hands clenched so hard around the steering wheel her knuckles paled. She flexed her fingers slowly, like she needed to physically release the tension before it cracked something open inside her. “What…?” My voice cracked. “What happened?” She didn’t speak at first. Just reached over and laid my coat across my lap.

“You should’ve listened to your instincts and gone home,” she said, barely above a whisper. Her gaze locked on mine, eyes burning. “I found Ty. And your other coworkers.” The second his name left her lips, my stomach twisted. “I asked around,” she continued, voice low and rough. “Didn’t take long to piece it together. He put something in your drink. Said it was just to ‘loosen you up.’” Her lip curled. “People saw him all over you. You trying to push him off.” My heart plummeted. “But when I got in his face?”

She scoffed, bitter and cold. “He started acting confused. Said you were just drunk. That you were all over him.” “I—I wasn’t—” My voice splintered. “I know.” Her reply came fast, sharp enough to slice through the shame trying to take root in me. “He knew too.

But he didn’t think anyone would call him on it.” I sank back in the seat, fragments clicking into place. That nauseating feeling. The way I could barely keep my eyes open. The way I just… faded. “Vic… what did you do?” She let out a humorless laugh. “Don’t worry. He won’t try that shit again. He’s lucky security got there when they did.”

Parents camp outside for hours, shivering in the cold, just to snag the latest must-have toy. Lovers hunt for the perfect gift, convinced that a price tag can measure affection. Every year, I tell myself this will be my last in retail. And yet, here I am—for the third year in a row—pushing through another chaotic holiday season, trapped in a department store that sells everything from Keurig’s to maternity wear. It isn’t the worst job I’ve had, but it’s definitely not the dream.

I maneuver an overstuffed cart through narrow aisles, balancing a mountain of returned merchandise. The task is dull, repetitive, but at least it keeps me busy until I finally clock out. One more hour. The screen reads 8:00 PM sharp, and right on cue, the store’s ancient speakers crackle to life with the Jackson 5’s “Santa Claus is coming to Town.” Not my favorite holiday song, but at least it drowns out the sound of my own misery.

I shove my phone back into my pocket and continue my task. “Hey, excuse me.”
