I will challenge you all to ponder, what comes to mind when you think of the word ‘campfire’? I’m sure if we could compare, the answers would be as diverse as the flecks of color inside each individual flame. Growing up in a small town in Southwestern Missouri, “campfire” reminds me of camping with family, summer camp, and more specifically, campfire stories—and even when there was no campfire, I had Grandma’s front porch, where I would sit with one of my oldest childhood friends and share…or twist…small town gossip into something far darker and more sinister than reality.
Needless to say, some nights I had trouble sleeping. And it is through this nostalgia, a desire for togetherness, community, and just good old-fashioned horror storytelling that the name “Campfire Publishing” came about. The name wasn’t enough. I searched for a “why”; the obvious being my love of horror and commitment to giving back to the genre everything it offered me from a young age.
And my, what an extensive genre horror is, from thriller to slasher to psychological, gothic, zombie, dark fantasy, containing elements of shadows, ghosts, demons, poltergeists, and you guessed it, dear reader—werewolves and vampires, two of the genre’s most beloved creatures. What I’ve found throughout my personal artistic journey, while speaking to fellow enthusiasts is that some don’t prefer slasher; but they enjoy zombies, or perhaps someone who doesn’t prefer gothic horror enjoys psychological horror or—well, I’m certain you get the picture.
And it’s because of this, that Campfire Publishing strives to publish a gamut of horror subgenres, each one in its own collection and each collection containing several volumes. Our campfire is a community— it is a sense of togetherness where we strive to be non-judgmental, safe, genuine—where we support and encourage a range of artistic voices from expert to novice, where readers can easily find organized collections of stories that fall within their preferred category of horror subgenres.
