I’m so glad you decided to come back.” The man extended his hand. “Doctor Gordon Raine. You do remember me, don’t you?” Edyn shook the doctor’s hand. “Of course I do, Doctor—” “Please, just call me Raine,” the doctor quickly interjected before guiding Edyn to his chair. “You remember that’s what I go by here.” Edyn took a deep breath and hesitantly sat in the chaise lounge chair nearby. This was the first time in two years he had been back to see his psychologist, and he was incredibly nervous.

He had never been comfortable opening up about his issues and emotions to someone else, which was why he’d stopped seeing Raine years ago in the first place, but he knew he needed to try something. Especially with what was happening to him lately. The room hadn’t changed much since the last time Edyn had been there. It was small and comforting, with Raine’s mahogany desk as the centerpiece, matching the surrounding wood-textured walls, and a small bookshelf to its right. The office had a colorful and lively look as Raine always made sure to have a few plants growing, one of which being the large fern next to Edyn’s chair.

Natural sunlight flooded the room through large windows that covered the upper half of the left wall facing Edyn. It didn’t have the feeling of a doctor’s office, and Edyn liked that. Raine took the chair to Edyn’s right, as he often did with his patients. Sitting beside them, rather than behind his desk, made their sessions feel more personal and less intimidating. Now toward the twilight stages of his career, Raine captured the appearance of someone from another era. He was a traditionalist in every sense of the word—never deviating too far from his usual collared shirt paired with dress slacks, with the occasional sweater vest overtop when he was feeling adventurous.
