My eyes widen and I don’t even blink. He wants me to go home with him. Stay with him in one house. See how he is in his home environment. Me! For my safety. “Home with you?” I whisper, hoping he doesn’t hear me, but I should have known better. Mateo hears and sees everything. “Yes, I have an extra room on one side of the house. You will have total privacy as well as protection.” He winks at me.

“Then again, at Bently’s, you will have all the cowboys and the cutest little boy.” I laugh as he wiggles his eyebrows. “I can’t say no to that.” I tease. I’ve never been this vocal with a guy before. I’m not the fun outgoing type and never talk to any guy like this. I’ve never felt this comfortable with anyone like I am with him. He shakes his head as he smiles. “Where do you want to stay for the time being?” I look down at my hand. Bently should be my only choice.

I know her better, but the thought of Mateo there to protect me sounds like heaven. Every time I’ve seen him he has been sweet and kind, but I know he has also been observing. He is sure to have seen all my bruises or even the times I was a little insecure while working. He was there all the time. My mind goes back to the beautiful blonde that he had dinner with.

I can’t live with him and his girlfriend. Even if he is only doing this because of his work. “I don’t want to get you into trouble with your girlfriend so–” “Wait, what?” He interrupts me. “The blonde you had dinner with last night,” I reply as my cheeks heat up. He laughs and I try to hide my face in his hands but he holds on to them. “That’s my sister, Marley. She lives with me.” He chuckles a little more as I look at him dumbfounded.

Now that he mentions it, they do look a lot alike. I feel so stupid for thinking it’s his girlfriend. “You two are a lot alike and she wants to help however she can.” “Okay, I’ll go home with you until everything has been sorted out,” I reply. “Great. I’ll phone Marley and make the arrangements. First, I need to take you down to the station so we can take a formal statement. Brandon has your father in the holding cells, but he won’t see you at all.”

His smile reassures me that I’m safe. Maybe it’s time for me to open up about what has happened at my house. Perhaps they will explain to me why parents treat their kids like that. “I just want to use the bathroom before we leave.” Mateo nods as he pulls out his phone.

I’m not giving two shits about the two having a screaming match at the entrance of the Piper Falls police station. I’m the Investigations Sergeant here, and I’m well aware of my nickname. I’m a grumpy asshole, and for good reason. I don’t take shit from anyone. If I say freeze, you better fucking freeze. I don’t run for shit. “You’re enjoying this.” Brandon Harris, my partner and friend, states as he sinks into the chair beside me. I have known Brandon since starting at the academy.

He matches my personality perfectly. He is the sweet, loving guy, whereas I’m the rough let’s get it over with guy. “I’m waiting for the rookie to go and try to stop them.” I lean back again and link my fingers behind my head. This is nothing new. The two boys, having a screaming match, have been here before and will be here again and again until they figure out that the girl is not worth fighting over or their parents decide to stop laying charges against each other.

Brandon puts his feet next to mine. “What’s it this time?”
