I say, staring out the window. My mind is caught in a storm—unpredictable and violent, swallowing me whole. Imaginary thunder strikes, making me wince The scar on my left eyebrow burns as the car engine starts and the yells of the photographers become louder. I barely notice Valentina sitting beside me, her presence just a distant awareness under the weight pressing on my chest.

Two deep breaths in and one out. The roar of photographers fades into something else—shattered glass, twisted metal, the sting of blood running down my temple. My tie becomes tighter and tighter until the feeling of suffocation becomes too much. “Elias?” Valentina’s voice is faint, like she’s speaking from behind a glass wall. I grip my tie, tearing it loose from my neck. The car is too small, the air too thin.

The echoes of spinning tires in the hospital parking lot turn into desperate yells in my mind. The pressure builds up inside of me no matter what I try to do. The images fill my mind. I can still feel the car swerving around in my memory, my neck hurts from the whiplash, my legs covered in glass. Then suddenly, silence. I’m back there.

My eyelids clamp shut as if that will keep the memory at bay, but it’s useless. I can feel my hands burning from the ripped nylon seatbelt I tore off of Grace. The weight of my sister’s body in my arms. The smell of gasoline and burnt rubber. Her struggling breaths. I close my eyes harder, trying to gap the distance between the past and the present.

Wanting to get the sight of blood on my hands out of my mind but it’s playing dirty tricks on me again. “Elias, you’re safe.” Valentina says softly, holding my face with both her hands. “I’m here with you.”

Taking the first step towards land feels like hearing leaves crunch behind you in a desolate forest—fucking terrifying.

I look down the side of the boat. The dark blue sea gets lighter as my eyes travel upwards from my spot at the marina. The eerie ultramarine fades into an obnoxious shade of cobalt, and I have to squint as I take in the lush mountains that surround the small piece of land I call my own.

Colors seem much more vibrant this summer than I remember. It seems my time away has done two things: made my memories hazy and turned me into an arrogant piece of shit who takes himself too seriously. I reach for the railing, but my body refuses to move. It’s hard not to dwell on the fact that three days ago my life was normal—or at least as normal as it has been for the past four years. Nothing prepares you for the call. My hands clammed up as I heard the words from someone back at the Palace.
