O might know. He ran the daily transport about then for the last of the mines Riggston operated. Unless he was a gritter miner, then I doubt O would know.” Before they left, Tedo said, “Oh, and you should probably take a bath. You stink.” I shrugged. “There’s no shower in the factory.” “I’ll bring you a miner’s bath kit when we come back,” Brea said.

“Trust me, it’ll benefit all three of us.” They left, and I could hear them stack the crates against the door to the cramped storage room I had made my home while Tekita and her enforcers were in Riggston. I had only a portable light to keep the darkness at bay. The room was so small, I couldn’t even fully stretch out, but I considered it a luxury apartment compared to running for my life outside.

According to Tedo and Brea, the enforcers and their drones were all over the streets, searching for me, which meant I was trapped here for the time being. Hopefully, that meant Karn wouldn’t come looking for me either. I’d become the most popular man in Riggston in a very bad way. I went back to working on the computer. I had plugged in a monitor but kept its network switch turned off in case whatever weird code that it’d been displaying was dangerous.

After meeting Karn, I had to assume the worst. Plus, I didn’t want my amp touching that dirty code. I let the mishmash of symbols scroll down the screen, watching it so Byte could read it. Her avatar currently sat next to me. “You figure it out yet?” I asked. “You think Karn’s amp is behind it?”

That all changed the day an experimental AI was shoved into his brain. Overnight, he became the most hunted man on the planet. Everyone—from corporate security forces to desperate rebels— wanted the highly advanced amplification technology that was inside his head. When Softbiotics Corporation killed his adoptive mother and abducted his best friend, Cal struck back, teaming up with the local rebels. The fight weakened Softbiotics’s grip on the world, but their victory came at the cost of destroying the rebellion.

The survivors, including Cal, scattered. Now, Cal is on the run, pursued across star systems. Every eleven days, he jumps to a new spaceport to stay ahead of the bounty hunters hot on his trail. As long as he keeps moving, he can stay alive. But when he stumbles across a colony in desperate need of help, running is easier said than done…

1kitap1.com/en 1 On day twelve, I finally quit puking. I only wish I felt as good as death warmed over. That piece of local fruit tasted good going down… but even thinking about its slightly sweet, thick flavor made me heave. It was a long trudge to where my ship waited in its dock.
