When Terry asked for volunteers and no one raised their hand, mine shot up. Of course I chose a cat. I skipped the first step—fully depicting the animal—and started walking around on two feet, with feline qualities fully integrated into my human character. Terry was impressed and said I could immediately advance to the second year of the program—and thus, go straight into my sophomore year. * * * NYU wasn’t nearly as expensive then as it is today, but it was still pricey.

And even though I liked the idea of living in a dorm, that would add a lot to the costs, so I had to find my own, cheaper place to live. I got lucky at first when a friend who was living at her nana’s apartment at 8th Street and Fifth Avenue, close to some of my classes, said I could be her roommate for two hundred dollars a month. This was a real steal. But the following year when Nana returned, I was back to square one and needed to find a new home.

I took classes in existentialism, psychology, and literature, in addition to my three days of studio work at Circle in the Square, but perhaps my most practical education was learning how to find an affordable apartment in New York City. I did all the typical things—put up notes on the boards at school, checked out Roommates Wanted lists at various restaurants, and so on. I’d even look at obituaries—who died?

Whose apartment was now available? A classic New York move. One day, my friend Monique—a sweet girl, although a little scattered at times—told me she had found a really cool place with another actress friend and they needed two more roommates. The fourth girl who’d be part of our new living situation was a model I didn’t know.

Driven Rock and Roll Saved My Life Afterword: President of the Girls League 1kitap1.com/en Preface Boobs Changed My Life Being a tomboy in my youth, I was always playing sports with the guys— baseball, football, dodgeball, you name it. But when my little buds started to blossom, I was terrified that my relationship with the bros would change. How right I was. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the 1970s—right smack in the middle of the explosion of porn.

Our local family theater turned into a triple-X adult movie house around the same time my blossoms turned into bona fide boobs. This book tells stories of how I survived the Valley with a C cup, and how I later survived Hollywood, autonomy intact. I’ve certainly had an unusual career. It hasn’t been very commercial, and it’s hardly been conventional, but I’ve been fortunate enough to experiment and play with different art forms—acting, singing, touring with a band, writing, directing, and producing.

In doing so, I’ve had to constantly fight for what I was passionate about.
