An Unexpected Texas Reunion – Heidi Main (1)

Brenna held up her hand and he high-fived her. Her grin was contagious, and it didn’t take long for Owen to forget the troublemakers he’d had today as he slapped her hand and looked forward to a relaxing weekend. Lulu gave them an excited bark and circled around her owner as though wanting to join in. “This marks the halfway point,” she said, sporting a casual outfit, unlike the clothing she wore a few weeks ago.
She no longer looked like she wanted to hide. A gentle breeze brushed escaped wisps from her messy ponytail against her cheek. Even though volunteers milled about, his gaze mingled with Brenna’s and the warm look she gave him zinged into his chest. Whoa, what was that? His eyes widened and he took a step away.
He shook off what he feared might be attraction. He’d only been without Willow for a few months. Well, five, but this interest in his high-school flame still seemed wrong. He didn’t want to sully Willow’s memory. Their afternoon volunteers, led by Hazel Murray, scurried off to the stables to start the cleanup process. For some reason, he and Brenna seemed content remaining in the shade of the pavilion.
Brenna removed Lulu’s vest and ruffled her fur. “Are you as excited as we are, girl?” The dog lowered the front half of her body to the ground in a playful stance, then zoomed around the pavilion. She was apparently just as happy as they were that they’d made it to the halfway mark and a free weekend was before them.
Except the excitement within Owen quickly morphed into worry. Three more weeks left of camp. The uncertainty about what he’d do with his life continued to gnaw at him. He was a widower with an infant and no feasible job or home. Five months ago, he was working at a job he loved, was married to the love of his life, and had a bright future. That car accident had stolen his wife and changed everything. Had turned his life and expectations upside down. Brenna picked up a fuzzy tennis ball and threw it into the field beyond the pavilion.
Lulu chased after it, returning with the ball and a grin. Evie, sitting in the front carrier on Owen’s chest, kicked her feet. He ruffled her hair. She loved facing outward these days so she could see the action. Since his mother had a medical appointment, he’d relieved her of her duties right before the afternoon pickup began and strapped Evie into the carrier.
“Why is it that dogs have such a deep, unconditional love?” Brenna asked, her voice full of wonder. “I mean, no matter how I act toward Lulu, whether I’m having a bad day or whatever, she’s always by my side.”
“Stop it, Owen. I know you don’t want me and you probably don’t need me.” Lulu pushed her nose at Brenna and she encircled her dog’s neck to give her a big hug. “Anyway,” she continued, “it’s probably just as hard on you to be around me all day. Every day.” “Brenna, my mother told me that you need to help run camp. You have reasons, but she wouldn’t explain.” She swallowed and started to play with her fidget rings.
“I don’t think I could live with myself if I didn’t help an old friend in need.” He lowered his voice. “We were friends once, weren’t we?” “We were. I hope we still are.” She rested her hands on her lap and met his eyes. “So I guess you deserve an explanation.” She blew out a breath as though she were about to tell him something important.
Was she finally going to tell him why she blocked his calls ten years ago? 1kitap1.com/en Heidi Main writes sweet inspirational romance novels set in small towns.
