Ani Buttons – AJ Estelliam

‘Cassidy! I just said I find you attractive! Not that I’m going to jump you at the first opportunity!’ I laughed. ‘Relax, Cassidy-I was using you as an example to explain how I feel about my sexuality. It’s all clues as to who I am.
Don’t worry-I’m not planning on getting intimate during all of this. It might not be wise when I haven’t got the foggiest who I am and where I’m from.’ She nodded, seemingly satisfied. ‘Good. We’re on the same page,’ she said, eating with relish. ‘Just one thing…’ ‘Yes?’ ‘The sleeping arrangements,’ she said, looking at me with that intense way yet again.
‘What about them? Don’t worry-there’s two bedrooms,’ I told her, indicating the corridor with my hand. ‘Oh I know there is-but I’m going to suggest we don’t use both,’ she said, slowly. ‘What? Why? I thought we just said we would avoid intimacy between us?’ I questioned. ‘I think we should-but I don’t want to leave you alone during the night. When sleeping, we’re all at our most vulnerable. As I’m here to protect you, I won’t be leaving you through the night alone.’
I stared at her. ‘You’re serious?’ I questioned. ‘Yeah,’ she said, matter-of-factly. ‘I’ll sleep in there with you. The floor is fine…’ I shook my head, and then sighed with resignation. ‘For Christ sake, Cassidy! I can’t let you sleep on the floor! It’s fine…we’ll sleep in the same room. It’s a big, king size bed, at least! We can stay on each side!’ I joked. ‘Well, whatever-but you take my point?’ she asked.
‘I do and I don’t. I understand that night-time is the time that we’re at our most vulnerable but we’re in the absolute middle of nowhere, Cassidy! Who the hell would know or be able to find me? And who would want to find me?’ She shook her head. ‘I don’t know the answers to those questions, Ani.
I’m just keen to take precautions. We don’t know what you’re facing or what you’re up against. Surely it makes sense to be cautious?’ ‘No, you’re right. I forget too easily,’ I said, letting the memories of how she found me come back.
I felt myself drifting, far away from the here and now. I couldn’t open my eyes, much less move. I was completely immobile and everything hurt. My thoughts were varied and everything was jumbled. I couldn’t open my eyes. Why couldn’t I open my eyes? I lost consciousness and floated around my head as I rested. The total, black oblivion encompassed my entire being. I could do nothing to help myself now.
‘Can you hear me, lady? Hey! Hey!’ a voice called. I groaned, the shouting in my ear hurting my head. ‘Hey! Come on, wake up!’ ‘Urgh,’ I managed, my voice coming out croaky and broken. ‘The ambulance is on its way. Can you tell me your name?’ the female voice asked. I tried to open my eyes but they felt heavy. ‘Ur…’ was all that came out when I attempted to speak.
‘Don’t worry-hang in there. Help is on its way. You’re going to be fine. I’m not going to let anything happen to you,’ the reassuring voice told me. I felt cold and my body was vibrating as I shivered hard. ‘God, you’re cold…but I shouldn’t move you,’ she muttered to herself. ‘It goes against procedure,’ she continued, ‘but better that than risk hypothermia in these freezing conditions.’ I felt her hands reach beneath me and she lifted my upper body upwards with cold hands and then pulled me bodily onto her laps.
Every little movement she made hurt me and I couldn’t help the groan of sheer pain as I was lifted. ‘I’m sorry…I’m so sorry…you’re okay. You’re okay,’ she told me, even as if she was reassuring herself as well. The pain ebbed and I began to feel the heat of her body seeping into my cold veins.
I had been so cold…so cold. Now, I was beginning to thaw-and it felt so good to be against warm, soft flesh. She smelled like fresh laundry, all clean and intoxicating. I breathed long and slow, as my racing heart calmed a little. ‘Don’t worry. Help will be here soon…we’ll get you to the hospital,’ she promised me.
