The screenplay, almost a novel, positively burst with specifically detailed renderings, not only of character and place, but of beast and plant, vehicle and machine, weaponry, and wardrobe. This remarkable assemblage of factual fiction was entirely the product of the mind, heart, soul, and imagination of James Cameron. Firing on all cylinders—as storyteller, filmmaker, engineer, scientist, artist, and spiritual seeker—Jim’s comprehensive, indeed obsessive, attention and insistence on verisimilitude set a standard that has been emulated and observed throughout the expansive growth of the Avatar saga.

Cameron’s imaginings continue to inspire and fuel an ever- expanding family of artists, designers, technicians, linguists, composers, and, of course, fans. This Visual Dictionary is a testament to both the individual and team efforts of so many creative minds at Lightstorm Entertainment and Wētā Workshop; their investment of time, energy, and passionate care is apparent on every page.

The old adage says that God is in the details. In this case, it can truly be said that Eywa is imbued and embedded in each word and illustration. Some nuggets are exotic, some highly technical, and some reveal aspects of the Na’vi that are almost, well, human. For example, the Tlalim clan, the peripatetic Wind Traders, are known throughout Pandora as not only the purveyors of news from afar, but also peddlers of gossip and tellers of tall tales.

This is but a single example of the myriad gems contained in this cornucopia of all things Avatar; an entertaining and valuable resource for Na’vi fan and Na’vi novice alike. I began by recalling my astonishment and admiration for the original Avatar screenplay. Perhaps I remember it so clearly because I still feel it, and if, perhaps, a sense of wonder has become somewhat familiar, it is nevertheless still exhilarating and exciting. I expect that you will be thrilled and delighted as well.
