“ARGHHH!” I screamed as orange juice splashed onto my chin and upper chest. The sticky juices streamed down, soaking my dress and dribbling uncomfortably between my breasts. I stared down at the mess, too stunned to move. Steve’s mouth rounded in horror. “I’m so sorry, Emma!” He swiveled his head around frantically as if someone would come to his rescue.

Caleb reached into his pocket and pulled out a snowy white handkerchief. He gently dabbed at the orange liquid dripping off me, but it was no use. Some of it had dried into sticky patches on me. I shut my eyes, feeling utterly humiliated. Instead of looking seductive, I looked like a pitiful drowned kitten. Tears seeped from the corner of my eyes. Everything was ruined. My dress. My evening. My plans to seduce Caleb.

A strong arm wrapped around my shoulders. “It’s okay Emma. You can get cleaned up in my room.” My eyes popped open in surprise. “Your room?” “I figured the party would last until the early hours of the morning so I rented a hotel room for the night. Why don’t we head upstairs and you can wash up?” I sniffled back my tears. “Okay.” “I’m really sorry, Emma. Please send the cleaning bill to me,” said Steve, his face tomato red. “It’s okay.” I had a feeling he regretted Caleb witnessing the accident more than the actual event, but I didn’t say anything.

I just wanted to get away from the clumsy oaf as quickly as possible. Caleb must have sensed my anxiousness. He nodded curtly at Steve and steered me through the crowd. We walked purposefully toward the exit and fortunately, nobody tried to intercept us and soon we were in the elevator. He put in a key card and pressed the button for the penthouse. I kept sneaking at him through my dark lashes as the elevator rose. Now that I was alone with him, I felt shy and nervous.

“Thanks for helping me, Mr. Evans.” He shot me a smile. “There’s no need, Emma. And I think a young lady who is already nineteen years old can call me Caleb.”

Remember to be on your best behavior.” My dad had a worried look on his face. “Don’t stress, Dad. I’m not going to embarrass you.”

I almost rolled my eyes, but I didn’t want to be accused of being childish. It had taken me days to convince him that I was mature enough to accompany him to his company’s twentieth anniversary gala. Mom had an unexpected business trip out of town and he had already RSVP’d for two people.

He was going to go stag, but I had talked him into taking me. I just turned nineteen and was back from college for the summer. There was hardly anything happening in our sleepy little town and I was itching for some excitement. Since Dad’s company was one of the most successful in the area, I knew the party would be amazing. Plus, in the festive atmosphere, I hoped the bartenders wouldn’t check for ID. I wasn’t a big drinker, but a cocktail or two would certainly improve the evening.

But the real reason I wanted to go to the party so badly was because I wanted to see my dad’s boss, Caleb Evans. Caleb– in real life, I always called him Mr. Evans, but in my mind, he was Caleb– founded the computer software firm when he was barely twenty-one. During his tenure as CEO, the company had thrived while his competitors had folded one after another. Everything he touched seemed to turn to gold. The only dark spot on his life was his failed marriage. He had divorced his wife a few years ago.

The rumor was that she didn’t want to have kids and Caleb badly wanted an heir. Personally, I thought she was crazy.
