It stank so bad that I never wanted to breathe again. I peed quickly, threw a glance at the dirty, rust- covered faucet and decided that I wasn’t going to wash my hands. I ran back outside and gulped down the cool fresh air in relief.

Looking around, I realized Mom was nowhere to be seen. “Mom!” I called out. Then I heard the sounds of some kind of kerfuffle coming from behind the toilets. I rushed straight back there to see some punk with thick stubble clamping his hand over Mom’s mouth, while his other hand held a knife to her throat.

He stared into her eyes and growled: “Shut your mouth, bitch, and give me your money, or I’ll slit you from ear to ear.” 1kitap1.com/en C h a p t e r 11 MOM WAS SCARED, but no more than that — no hysteria or tears, just a look of fear in her eyes and a nervous tremble. What a brave woman, I thought as I gave the mugger a wide berth and came up behind him.

“What are you bleating about, you dumb cow?! Give me the money, quick! Come on, bitch, quick!” hissed the man. Then suddenly he felt a light touch at the top of his thigh. Unbearable cold raced down his leg, burning the skin and paralyzing the muscles. “What the f…?” shouted the mugger, distracted for a second. Mom pushed his hand away and leaped to one side. I remained standing still, watching as the ice spread further across the man’s groin.

“Vey often say vat fugs like you ought to be sterilized. Well, I’m going to freeze your little peeny off,” I said with a giggle, staring into the mugger’s eyes, where I could see true terror forming. He lashed out with his knife but missed. I jumped back, summoned Gracie, and tossed her onto the asphalt.

The stone bounced up and flew straight into the thug’s forehead. I wasn’t intending to kill him, just to knock him out. He slumped to the ground and dropped his knife. Fortunately, while summoning Gracie, I’d ordered her to keep quiet and she’d obeyed, otherwise I’d have had an interesting conversation with Mom ahead of me. “Right, let’s see if vere’s anyfing useful here,” I said, rubbing my hands.

“Misha! Let’s get out of here!” shouted Mom, grabbing me up in her arms and racing as far away as possible from the unsavory toilet. “Wait! What about my trophy? My trophy…” I wailed, watching as the distance between me and the DNA sample I’d been planning to take grew greater.

But having an indecisive enemy can be great too. Before I went to bed, Ostap warned me of the coming attack. His exact words, “Don’t go to bed too early tonight,” couldn’t have been taken any other way. Late at night, I hid under the quilt and summoned Mimo. My exact copy lay down on the bed and fell asleep.
