Beacon Of Hope – Marcus Cass

On this side, transport was ready as well—a powerful tractor with a low platform attached, lightly reinforced with a basic air cushion. The mine overseer himself stepped onto the crossing. I couldn’t see his face from here, but he walked with steady confidence, guiding the load on an invisible magical tether. The children squealed in delight again, and the elder muttered something that sounded like an awed curse. It really did look mesmerizing.
A man and a chunk of rock seemed to glide above the water, while beneath them the glowing path shimmered, heightening the spectacle. The fish saved by the vodyanoy surfaced nearby. It almost seemed as though they, too, were staring in astonishment at the solemn procession. Borisov stepped onto solid ground and exhaled. He’d been worried, after all. The workers immediately took over, moving the cargo onward.
“When I grow up, I’m gonna do magic too!” a confident child’s voice rang out. “Like—whoa! Big time!” Turning around, I spotted Olesya among the children—the manager’s daughter. If anyone had the potential for that kind of “big time,” it was her. The empire hadn’t seen talent like that in a long while. For now, though, she could keep running barefoot after chickens. Adulthood would come soon enough. I sat down right on the sun-warmed planks, let my legs dangle, and closed my eyes wearily.
The elemental source churned like the lake itself while I built the crossing. At the same time, the water was soothing by its very nature. The floating bridge trembled above the lake. I admired it—and pondered long and hard. Next, something would have to be set on fire… 1kitap1.com/en C h a p t e r 1 4 THE FIRE ELEMENT WASN’T nearly as straightforward as water.
Especially if you didn’t live next to an active volcano obligingly erupting over the nearest town. That would have been an instant rank. But there were none nearby.

Time seems to stretch without end and yet slip away all at once—a dense, vivid rush of images and impressions. It felt as though we had only just sat down at the table when darkness was already settling in, the city’s clamor ebbing, a great moon drifting up into the sky. And yet we had eaten our fill, drunk tea with sweets, talked ourselves empty, and laughed until our hearts were light.
Gordey went off to bed. The ancestral spirit set out on its rounds.
