Soon thereafter Giufà began to tell everyone: “I brought my mother a large pot filled with money that I found beneath a pile of rocks.” When the people heard this, they went to the court and filed charges against him before a judge. Then the magistrates went to Giufà’s mother and said, “Your son has been telling people everywhere that you’ve kept a pot of money that he had found. Don’t you know that one must give the court any money that’s found?” “Gentlemen, oh my gentlemen,” yammered the woman, “do you really want to believe everything that my dumb Giufà says in broad day- light?

How much more do I have to suffer as his poor mother? My son will be the end of me. I don’t know the first thing about a pot with money.” “But, Mother,” Giufà cried, “don’t you remember? I brought you the pot during the day, and that very same night the baby Jesus threw me dates and raisins down from Heaven.” “Don’t you see how dumb he is? He doesn’t know what he’s saying,” his mother declared. Indeed, the magistrates agreed and went away thinking, “Giufà is truly much too dumb!”

Giufà and the Door Another time his mother wanted to go to mass and said to Giufà, “Pull the door behind you when you leave, Giufà.” When his mother was in the church for mass, Giufà lifted the door out of its sockets and pulled it to his mother in the church. “Here’s the door, Mother,” he said.

Giufà and the Hen There was another time that his mother wanted to go to mass in the church. “Giufà,” she said, “pay attention to the hen and make sure she doesn’t leave her eggs. Also, make sure you give her something to eat.” When his mother was away, Giufà gave the hen some bran and in the process became hungry himself.

Because he found nothing to eat in the house, he took the hen, slaughtered it, cooked it, and ate it all up.
