I’d gone to the gym before sunrise to make sure I was alone, and left before anyone else arrived. ​Luca texted me, wondering where I had been. Since he knew everything I told him why I was avoiding the arena. ​“You need to go on a date.” Sarah spoke over our morning coffee. “Give me tinder, I’m going to find you a date.” ​“Not again…” I shook my head. “That went so well the first time, I really don’t want to do it again.” ​“You’re avoiding the rink, you’re avoiding your friends except for me.

Josh is gonna clue in and start asking questions. Let’s get you a date, and that can be your excuse.” ​She wasn’t wrong. I reluctantly handed her my phone and she had matches almost right away. “This guy is cute, and he’s not a chem student at the university.” ​“Ha. Ha. Ha.”

I rolled my eyes. “What does he do?” ​“Well, but the look of his clothes, he looks like a farm boy. His name is Trey.” She handed over my phone. ​He was cute, tall, and had a big truck in his profile photo, typical. “I asked him if he wanted to go to the hockey game with you.” ​“You didn’t.” I went to the messages and sure enough, she had.

“Why! I don’t want to have to go through the awkwardness that I did last time.” ​“Then don’t! Be honest, look how terribly that went last time?” She reminded me of how hard I worked to hide my connection to the team from Bryan and I cringed. ​“Fine.” Just as I agreed to her suggestion, a response popped up. He would be here to pick me up at 6:00. ​“You better be right about this idea. And he better not be a douche like Bryan was.

I can’t deal with drinking and driving, it’s so unsafe.” ◆◆◆ ​Ding. Ding. Ding. ​The doorbell chimed as Trey waited on the front step. “Hi, you must be my date.” I grinned as I opened the door to a tall and handsome looking country boy. ​He wore a plaid button-down shirt, ball cap with the team logo on it, and cowboy boots tucked under his very well fitting jeans. ​“Nice to meet you Lauren.”

He extended his hand to shake mine.
