Beneath The Wings Of A God – AMaree Jones

That part filled him with purpose. “Are you going to come in?” The whisper pulled his attention, which had been captivated by her small, bare feet. They seemed to conflict with the rest of her.;Unscarred, almost untouched by the violence of the world, they reminded him how delicate life was, even hers.
He did not expect her to want to speak to him, but keeping his eyes on her was motive enough to go with her. Are you going to swim? He asked himself, confused as to why he was even considering something so…inti- mate. Rikkina grew tired of his silent contemplation. “You said you could swim?”
Rikkina blurted out, a mix of confusion and challenge in her question. Ignoring her, he unlaced his own boots. Annoyed at the question, mem- ories of childhood taunts invaded his thoughts. They grew darker, the feel of water choking the air from his lungs, the time he’d been held under so long he’d blacked out. It was that day that he decided he would learn to swim.
He did not prefer the feel of the earth on his feet, but he placed one next to the other upon the cool earth, willing a calm to the torment of his past. Turning to face her, he found her looking at his own feet. The feeling of her eyes on that part of him was oddly erotic.
Who had ever really looked at them before, besides himself? Abbadon could not think of a single person as heat crept along his spine. Her eyes upon him in such a vulnerable state made him yearn to take advantage of her own vulnerability, to remind her that she did not hold any power between them, not since she’d left him alive when she should have killed him. Suddenly her eyes flicked up to his, as though she could feel the weight of his stare. Abbadon watched as unease found a home upon her face.
But only for a moment, her arrogance lurched forward. Clearing her throat, she squared her shoulders and began to strip the clothing from her body. If he were anyone else, he would have missed the tremble in her fingers as she grasped the hem of her tunic. His own sick pride took pleasure in the feel of hers, knowing she wouldn’t cower before him. Even if she wanted to, he knew that the warrior in her would never admit to fear, even when her body betrayed her.
Standing to remove his own clothing, he watched as she walked into the freezing water.

Prosperity and progress flour- ished under his reign. Magic gathered about the land and its people — a blessing from the Gods, the writings proclaimed. But man was jealous, and the Gods were fickle. At the edge of Sigurd Haftor’s battle axe, the reign of King Harold came to an end.
Refusing to proclaim Queen Elfa the ruler of Revna, the high-born men and greatest warriors from each na- tion drove her from her home.
