“What could possibly go wrong?” “Don’t tempt Fate,” Ryan warned. “Knowing our luck, absolutely everything could go wrong.” “Speakin’ o’ which, what d’ you make of Charlie bein’ caught up with that wrongun, Alexei Whatshisface?” “Rachmaninov,” Ryan said. “I think she must have been frightened for three solid years, which is heartbreaking.” Frank’s paternal instincts reared up, with a vengeance. “He’s a reet nasty piece of work,” he growled.

“And her bein’ such a canny lass, n’all. Nobody deserves all that worry, but especially not when they’re just a lovely, hardworkin’ body like Charlie.” “What people do or don’t deserve never plays into these things,” Ryan said quietly. “Life isn’t fair, otherwise we’d be out of a job.” Phillips inclined his head. “Jack’s suggested a meeting, out of hours, to discuss the best way forward,” Ryan continued. “After work, at Charlie’s place.” Phillips nodded. “Samantha’s got some party or other with her ridin’ friends, down at the Pony Club,” he said, with the air of a man who considered the whole ‘horsey’ world an alien planet.

“She’s stayin’ over at her mate’s house, afterwards, so me and Denise will both be there for Charlie. Solidarity, and all that.” Ryan expected nothing less. “What about your Anna? You don’t need to come to the meetin’ if she needs you with her, lad. We can update you, later.”

Ryan thought of how his wife had looked when he’d left her, early that morning. He knew there were further conversations to be had, and investigating to do, but his overriding concern was to protect her from the past for as long as possible. On the other hand, there was work to be done, and nothing was ever solved by burying their heads in the sand.

“I’ll speak to her and see how things are,” he decided. “She isn’t due back to work at the university until the first week of January, and she can always take some time off, if she needs it. As for this stuff with her father, there’s a lot she hasn’t told me about her earlier life, because it was too painful to repeat. I don’t want to cause her any stress, if I can help it— especially, since we can’t be absolutely sure whether he’s alive or dead, at this stage.”

Phillips thought back to when his own wife had been at her most vulnerable, during the long recovery that followed a traumatic time at the mercy of a man who’d kidnapped her and who might have killed her. Denise bore scars from those days, mental and physical, and she’d never be ‘whole’ in the same way again.

That being said, he considered her an even stronger woman than she was before the attack, and all the more so for having been responsible for her own escape.
