Betrayal And Lies – Avery Gearhardt (1)

I had to know the truth. As if to add salt to my wounds and make me feel even shittier, Jann Arden’s melancholic voice crooned through the radio ‘How do you cool your lips, after a summer’s kiss? How do you rid the sweat, after the body bliss?’ I turned off the radio with a huff. Fuck you very much thanks, I did not need a reminder of how I could be ‘insensitive, to add to my already heavy conscience.
I drove through town with the address Joe had given me burned into my brain like a brand. The apartment complex was a sleek, modern building, the kind that looked like it could house the secrets of a thousand unhappy marriages. I parked the car and took a deep breath, steeling myself for what I might find.
“The landlord will meet you in the lobby.” Joe texted. The lobby was eerily quiet, the kind of quiet that screams of things left unsaid. The landlord, a middle-aged man with a paunch and a suspicious glint in his eye, handed me the key without a word. He knew what this was about, he had to.
I took the elevator to the third floor, the numbers ticking off like a countdown to doom. When the doors slid open, I stepped into the hallway, the carpet muffling the sound of my heels. The smell of cleaning products hung in the air, a feeble attempt to mask the scent of deceit. My hand trembled as I slid the key into the lock of apartment 305.
The door swung open to reveal a space that was decorated with all the impersonal charm of a hotel room, except for the photographs on the mantle. Photographs of Charles and Brooke, smiling, happy, together. I felt sick. This was real. I walked through the apartment, each room more painfully intimate than the last.
The bedroom, the kitchen, the living room with the couch where they had probably laughed and talked and planned their life together. It was a slap in the face, a stark reminder of the lie I had been living. The walls whispered their secrets, and I could almost feel their presence. I found myself in the bathroom, staring at the toothpaste tube with two distinct lines. Two toothbrushes side by side, one with blue bristles, one with pink. The sight of it sent me spiraling.
To all my readers, Thank you for continuing to support me. It is because of you, that I continue to write. 1kitap1.com/en Chapter One Amber Meeting Kameron Chandler was never part of my plan. She was never someone I ever expected to cross paths with at all.
But how can you un- meet someone after you have seen them? After you have felt the electricity of their gaze slice through the crowded room and connect with yours? How can you ignore the way their voice, like a siren’s call, tugs at the fabric of your reality, demanding your full and undivided attention? You can’t. Not when they are standing right in front of you, challenging everything you thought you knew about your own life.
My life was already perfect, or so I had thought. I had met Brooke Donaldson when we were just kids. Her family had moved next door to ours; it was ironic really because Brooke had that girl next door looks. Tall, blonde, with brown eyes and a smile that could light up any room. She was the kind of girl who did not know her own beauty.
And then there was me, the tomboy from the wrong side of the tracks, always getting into scrapes and trying to keep my grades up enough to get into the academy. We were opposites, but opposites attract. And boy, did we attract. We were insatiable teenagers in love, and as we grew up, our love just grew stronger. And we became insatiable adults. Committing my life to Brooke was the easiest decision I ever made.
Of course, I asked for her parents’ blessing, but we both knew that their approval was just a formality. After all, our families had grown so close over the years, it was as if Brooke had been a Clayton and I a Donaldson all along. The wedding was beautiful, simple but beautiful, with her mother’s garden in full bloom. The scent of roses and lavender filled the air as we said our vows beneath the old oak tree, the same one we used to climb when we were young, sharing our secrets and our dreams.
Life had its ups and downs, sure. We had our fair share of arguments and sleepless nights. But we always found our way back to each other. Brooke had her own path to follow, though. While I was fighting crime, she was fighting deadlines at the local magazine. She had a nose for a good story, and a knack for telling it. She started off as a journalist and worked her way up to editor. Her job meant late nights and early starts, but she never complained.
