Better Off Dead – Tess James – Mackey

She watched in amazement as the rage melted from Gary’s grizzled face. He nodded with a serene expression before shuffling meekly away. ‘You’re a wizard,’ Lacy breathed as Chan closed the window and clapped their hands together. Chan laughed. ‘Plenty of practice dealing with upset customers, that’s all.’ ‘Why doesn’t he move to a different caravan?’ Lacy asked, peering out of the window to watch Gary trudge back towards his grotty caravan.
‘Then he wouldn’t have to worry about any of this.’ Chan collapsed onto the bed beside Marc and shrugged. ‘We all have our idiosyncrasies.’ Lacy looked at Chan in surprise. They looked like someone who would enjoy getting into a scrap on a night out, but here they were, throwing around words like ‘idiosyncrasies’. ‘Doesn’t it freak you out?’ Lacy pushed, watching Gary walk away until she was sure he’d definitely gone. ‘That there are people like Gary, right there…people who could get into the dorms if they really wanted to?’
‘Ah, Gary’s harmless,’ Marc insisted as he emerged from inside his T- shirt. ‘But what if…?’ Lacy chewed the inside of her lip. ‘What if something happens again, like it did ten years ago? What’s to stop someone coming in here and—’ ‘Wha—’ Marc began, before Chan abruptly cut him off. ‘Lacy, don’t worry about it, honestly.’
They stood and placed a comforting hand on Lacy’s shoulder. ‘I know what it’s like, being somewhere like this – it’s intense, claustrophobic. Your imagination can start running away with you a bit.’ Lacy flushed, remembering Chan’s concerned face the evening she’d freaked out on the beach. ‘I worked in Blackpool for the Christmas season and, trust me, that was much worse than here.
You had to perform for customers all day. Pretend to be this happy, smiley person, when really you were sick of the sight of them, and everything was shit.’ Marc nodded viciously and Lacy wondered if it was really so bad working here. But then again, her job involved staring at the water with a hot lifeguard all day. She might not feel the same if she was dealing with angry drunks or dancing around dressed as a bear.
‘In Blackpool we had people just not turning up for work because they couldn’t hack it anymore,’ Chan continued. ‘Like Ceri?’ Lacy said quickly, hoping for some intel on why she might have fled. ‘Yeah.’ Chan nodded thoughtfully but didn’t offer anything further. ‘Andy said she was close with Dylan,’ Lacy pressed, wincing at how obsessive she sounded. It was clear Dylan and Ceri had history, even if she hadn’t been anywhere near the cliff last night.
But that wasn’t what bothered her.

Lacy swiped the tears off her cheeks as she snapped her head up to look at her sister.
As always, Winter was dressed head to toe in black – black jeans, black shirt, black eyeshadow, black hair. And judging by the tight muscle in her jaw and the scowl that creased her pale forehead, her mood was just as dark. ‘Nothing,’ Lacy murmured. Winter raised an eyebrow and leaned against the doorframe.
It should have been a casual movement but made her look even more menacing. ‘I mean, no one,’ Lacy stuttered. ‘I’m fine.’ She bowed her head and a rogue tear dropped onto her duvet, narrowly missing the camera nestled between her legs.
