He grabbed my wrist and pulled me from my chair, almost knocking over a waiter in his haste. We settled the bill and left a tip before speed walking through the parking lot. He unlocked the car doors, and when I finished buckling my seatbelt, he leveled a stare at me that felt like it penetrated my skin and bones. I stared back, wondering what was coming next. My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my fingertips. Aaron started the car and kept his gaze firmly locked on the road.

He gripped the steering wheel and shifter so tightly I thought he was going to break them off. By the time we arrived at his apartment, sweat trickled down my back and I was having a hard time keeping my breathing under control. He jammed the car in park and ripped the keys from the ignition. “Aaron?”

I said cautiously. He stared at me, pausing with his hand clutching the door handle. “C’mon,” he said in a voice so low it sent shivers all the way down to my shoelaces. I had to jog to keep up with him. In the elevator, we both concentrated on the lighted panel, watching intently as the buttons lit up. When the door opened, he stopped and took a deep breath. “Last chance to back out,” he whispered. I clenched my jaw and breezed by him, heading straight toward his apartment.

The moment my back was to him I heard his breathing stutter and he swore loudly when he couldn’t get his keys out of his pocket. He fumbled with the lock until he looked like he wanted to kick the door down. He finally managed to slide the key in correctly and usher me into his apartment. The second the door closed, he had me pinned against the wall, his dark eyes fixed on my face, clearly watching for my reaction.

“Christ, Aaron,” I gasped, waiting for him to do something, anything. “Are we crossing this line?” “I didn’t know there was a line.” His breath fanned across my face and I wanted him to lick the nerves out of my mouth. “And if there was, I’m pretty sure we erased it at Worlds.” “That was different,” I said. “It doesn’t have to be anything.

This was supposed to be our year, but with one wrong move and an unfortunate bounce of the puck, the season came crashing to a bitter end. I woke up nursing a hangover born in the depths of hell. My bones ached, my muscles protested every movement, and my mind wasn’t firing on all cylinders. When I opened my mouth, I realized a sandpit had formed, and I was in desperate need of a drink.
