Each car lining up must have been packed to the gills with shoppers. “This place is kicking!” Darlene said. “Let’s get our buns up there!” She grabbed Mike’s arm and went to run toward the escalators when Melanie Nielsen stepped out from behind one of the potted plastic ferns with little Joey hanging from her front. Darlene, unable to stop in time, slammed straight into Melanie’s side and sent her sprawling. Keith Nielsen, who was standing behind the fake fern, thought fast and reached out and grabbed Melanie faster than lightning, saving her and Joey from slamming onto the tile floor.

Darlene didn’t stop; she just glared at Melanie and ran up the escalator to CD World. “Oh my God,” Mike said, reaching down to help Melanie up. “I’m so sorry.” “What the hell is her problem?” Keith bellowed at Mike. “She just gets a little . . . hyper.” Mike shrugged. “Hey! What’s your problem? Kirsty snapped at Melanie in her privileged, preppy tone. “Kirsty!” Bobby snapped back at her.

Kirsty gave him a foul look and said, “There’s no harm done! You guys can be such losers,” then ran after Darlene up the escalator. Mike shrugged. Bobby stood behind his friend and looked awkward. “Real nice girlfriends you guys have got there,” Keith barked at Mike and Bobby. “They are not our—” Mike started to say, but Melanie cut him off.

“No harm done. It’s okay.” She held onto Keith with one arm and cradled Joey’s small head in the other hand. “Sorry.” Mike shrugged and backed up. Bobby followed him as they walked to the escalators. “Are we just going to let them go?” Keith snarled. Melanie gripped him tighter, looked deeply into Keith’s eyes, and asked, “Are you telling me you were never young?

It’s just kids being kids.” “It’s kids being disrespectful,” Keith replied with a frown. “It’s over,” Melanie said calmly. “Let’s go have a nice time.” Keith sighed. “You’re too easygoing.” “That’s why you love me.” Melanie grinned at him. He kissed Melanie, then gave Joey a kiss on his soft head. “Come on,” Keith said, “let’s go buy some of those overpriced rocks you want so bad.” “Hey!” Melanie said playfully.

Mike and Bobby stood close to one another as they went up the escalator. “That was major embarrassing,” Bobby said sharply to Mike. “I’m getting a little tired of these two.” “You’re telling me,” Mike agreed. “That was a major lawsuit waiting to happen. Do you know how much my father likes babies? Big- time. If something had happened to the kid because of my so-called date, I would not be getting an inheritance.” “You know what I think?” Bobby asked.

1kitap1.com/en Chapter 1 Onion Mountain – Portland, Oregon November 3, 1986 “Get out of that bush, you fucking furry thing!” shouted Chester Hardison to the rustling foliage ahead of him. He swallowed the last mouthful of his warm Iron City Beer and tossed the can into the winter-withered trees behind him, where it crashed to the ground on rusted brown leaves. Chester wiped his beer-dripping gray beard with the cuff of his filthy plaid shirt and raised his shotgun toward the rustling bushes.

His eyes were dreary from the beer—the last of the six-pack he’d consumed up here on Onion Mountain—and the shotgun’s barrel blurred to double. “I ain’t gonna tell ya agin. Get ya filthy rear end outta that bush, critter dog!” Chester yelled. The bushes stopped shaking, and the critter dog in question, Chester’s black-and-tan coonhound named Old Buddy lumbered out with ears and tongue flopping.

The faithful hound looked up with love for his drunken bum of a master. “Look at ya,” Chester said, raising his shotgun so it sat on his shoulder. “All that noise, hollering, and screaming, and you got nothing to show for it. No bun for the oven, not even the filling for a possum pie.
