Picturing Ariana’s expression, his skull felt like it was going to explode. Could Willa have done it deliberately? Had that supposed accident in the street been anything but accidental? Logically, the answer to that was possibly, at least. And yet he knew that it wasn’t. That she was as stunned as he was. Unflatteringly, aside from the sex, he got the feeling that she saw him not as a catch but a complication.

The room felt suddenly like it was closing in on him. He needed to get out of here. Get some air. Move. Run. Throwing back the sheet, he got to his feet and made his way to the window and pushed open the shutters. There was enough light. All he needed to do was get dressed. And then he would run and keep running until the ache in his lungs offset the one in his chest.

1kitap1.com/en Willa pressed the heels of her hands into her eyes, blocking out the daylight that was creeping in through her window, wishing she could as easily block out the memory of that kiss. She had been awake for about an hour and spent most of that time wishing she could go back to sleep. At least asleep, she didn’t have to deal with her stupidity. As if everything wasn’t enough of a mess.

What she should have been doing was containing it, shushing it into submission so that she could get on with her job. Instead, she had thrown fireworks into a bonfire. His mouth on hers. Her breath mingling with his. At some point early yesterday evening, either of her own accord or because Ares had sent her, Iona knocked on her door with some freshly squeezed peach juice, and she had taken the opportunity to excuse herself from supper by claiming that she had a migraine. She hated lying, but she’d had more than enough of Ares Konstantinou for one day.

That was one way of putting it. She felt her cheeks burn as the kiss swelled up inside her again, and she touched her lips, remembering how he’d bent his head and fitted his mouth to hers. She should have pushed him away. Or slapped him like the heroine in an old black-and-white movie. But instead, she had kissed him right back, unthinkingly, as if it was something they had done a hundred times before.

It was a bubble of pure, distilled ecstasy. A fever dream outside of time. But things were different now. That pleasure had blossomed into new life. “The last time I checked, it takes two to make a baby, Willa.” She stared at him steadily, and the forest of thorns was back. He could feel her withdrawing, but she couldn’t hide everything, he thought, his eyes snagging on the pulse hammering against the delicate skin of her throat.

His body tensed as he imagined pressing his mouth against it. Would he be able to taste what she was feeling? He certainly wasn’t going to hear it from her lips. She gave him one of those cool, precise looks of hers that gave off Cleopatra-on-her-throne vibes, and despite his irritation he found himself admiring her poise.

“There will be plenty of time for us to discuss how to move forward,” she said, after a hard pause that left his teeth on edge because it was a lawyer’s answer. But she wasn’t supposed to be acting as his lawyer right now. 1kitap1.com/en Louise Fuller was a tomboy who hated pink and always wanted to be the prince—not the princess! Now she enjoys creating heroines who aren’t pretty pushovers but are strong, believable women.
