Edward’s obnoxious grin mocked me, his eyes lighting with mirth. This was his time to get back at me for forcing him to date twenty women at the same time last year. I turned to Madison to see if she would save me. She was just as happy as her husband, if not more so. Her excitement bubbled over. I tried not to groan; this whole ordeal was proving to be difficult.

The feelings Anna stirred in me last night were dangerous. I wanted to send everybody home and stay in this paradise alone with her to rekindle our old romance. But it was clear she wasn’t here for that. She felt a sense of obligation to me for helping her get through her dark history. Even if some of her questions to me seemed otherwise. Unfortunately, her attempt was misguided and would likely do more damage than good. I had to overcome my feelings for her. It was the whole reason I was here.

What better way to do it than with her here? If I interacted with her long enough would it finally click that she didn’t want me? I plastered on a fake smile, saying goodbye to my best friend, trying not to think about how he was leaving me alone to be eaten by wolves. “I’ve given Anna all the information for today. You’re going to have your three group dates then Anna will choose one group to go home after that.

Only ten women will remain after today.” I nodded absentmindedly. I didn’t care about this. “You’ll be able to have more personalized one-on-one time with a smaller group.” One of the girls interrupted Madison. “Is there any money attached to this little shindig? I mean if someone actually lasts that long with Jackson guiding things.” Edward was having a hard time tamping down his smile.

He really was enjoying his payback. “Just a free vacation. Isn’t that good enough?” She begrudgingly nodded. “There is a shuttle coming to pick up the five women who didn’t make the cut later tonight.

I sat in front of my computer, combing my fingers through my messed hair, staring at the anti- Jackson website. I shouldn’t let it get to me, but it was, which was probably the point. I had no other way to release my pent-up emotions, so I sat in my uncomfortable dinette chair watching the computer screen repeatedly play over and over a very catching Easter egg that appeared over the website text.

One of my past relationships had created the website in response to the billboard that my best friend, Edward, had rented for me just because I had lost a bet. Watching my disgruntled ex’s new creation only helped to drill in my consciousness I wouldn’t be as lucky as my friend. The website was the only reason I was willing to go through with letting Edward put my face on a billboard in Times Square.

Seeing evidence of the hurt I’d unintentionally caused women because of my actions forced some remorse. Not a ton, but some. At the moment, I only wished we would have expanded my billboard to be placed out of the state because clearly, I wasn’t going to find anyone in this town. I had already dated them all apparently, which was quite the feat since we lived in New York and all. I typed the Contra code on my keyboard, watching the Easter egg Dana had put into the website she built.
