Everyone was so kind in spite of what they might be thinking of her. But Livvy and Blair hadn’t recoiled when they came to understand what horrors had formed her past. “Nero was certain I would hang for the poisoning,” she continued, “whether I had intended it to happen or not. And my failure to call for help would surely convince everyone of my guilt.

So my cousin insisted that no one could know how grandfather had died…that we had no choice but to… roll his body into the pond. It would look as if he’d drowned accidentally. My guilt would be our secret.” If her shaking had subsided, it returned then with a vengeance, along with those steady streams of tears. She gasped for breath and no matter how firmly Stanley held her, no matter how gently he patted her, she could not evade the re-breaking of her heart.

When she caught her breath again, she was determined to finish quickly. “If I stop now, I will never dare start again… “The water was perhaps 20 feet away.” She took a deep breath. “I can still feel the thud of his bones each time we rolled him onto his back, then lifted him again. I felt like we were killing him over and over again. And the final, horrible betrayal of pushing him one last time, into the water, was too much to bear.

I believe I fainted. I fell into the water too. “I awoke to the sound of Nero shouting for help. He was there in the water with me, holding my head above the surface. The gardener arrived and pulled me out. Nero told the man that we had found our grandfather floating in the water and that I fainted. Nero was given credit for saving me from drowning.

“No mention was ever made of the little picnic at the folly. No one ever suspected that grandfather died of anything but drowning. Everyone was simply too grateful that I had survived. And while the adults dealt with Grandfather’s body, Nero took me to the kitchen and showed me my mistake. “Everyone praised Nero, and he was almost pleasant to be around, while I became quiet and sullen. Eventually, after the story was retold for the hundredth time, Nero looked me in the eye, daring me to deny it, while he told my grieving grandmother that I had promised to marry him one day.”

“He knew I could not argue, and so with every subsequent retelling, the story always ended with my promise to marry him.

Muir About the Author 1kitap1.com/en BODY AND SOUL 1kitap1.com/en CHAPTER ONE “I would very much like to murder your wife.” Stanley Winters— Viscount Forsgreen and heir to the Duke of Rochester—bowed to his friend manning the receiving line at the first rout he’d attended since returning to London. “Your Grace. Good of you to come.” Northwick bowed in return. “I would prefer you did not. Rather fond of her, you know.”

Stan took a step to the side, lifted Livvy’s hand, and kissed it. “Lady Northwick,” he said through clenched teeth. “Your Grace.” She grinned. “If you must murder me, would you mind waiting until tomorrow?
