“It’s fine,” I told him without even looking over my shoulder. “You don’t even want flowers.” “How do you know? Maybe I do!” Damen rebutted. I glanced at him as I stood, vase in hand, and he flushed. “Okay, I don’t. But that’s not the point.” The last thing I really wanted to talk about was Norman, but here we were. “Why do you hate that Norman is being nice to me?” I asked. Was there something I was missing?

Damen had trusted him before I’d come along, so what was the big deal? “Because that’s not what’s happening!” Damen protested, a certain edge to his voice. Julian stood, looking at me only briefly, then back to Damen, before moving to my abandoned seat. His hesitation to intervene with Damen’s madness made me pause, as did the too-interested expression on Miles’s face.

They knew something I didn’t. “What?” “I did a tarot reading,” Damen began, and my imagination briefly wandered to him doing said reading. I’d never seen him actually use tarot cards, but surely it was a sight. “We can’t trust him. Especially with you. He has an ulterior motive. He knows he’s under observation, and you’ve been the only one on his side. Why else would he bring you gifts?” “Because that’s what Southern gentlemen do.” I set down the vase and began to unwrap the flowers.

This was stupid; I knew Damen was right—in a way. Norman was trying to save his own butt. But there was something else telling me, nagging at me, that the red- headed man needed help. I was, apparently, the only thing that stood between him and permanent dishonor.

I couldn’t just step back and let him lose his job. It was too important to him.

It’s an occult-based science that was popular during the Heian period in Japanese history. The most popular practitioner was Abe no Seimei. Their magic is drawn from the underworld. They are also fortune tellers, tarot masters, and can bind a shikigami to them to act as their worldly familiar. Shikigami — A shikigami is a spirit guide, of sorts, that is present on Earth through a contract with an onmyoji.

They have a human form but prefer to take on their animal shape in this realm. They act as an intermediary between the underworld and this realm on behalf of their onmyoji. Necromancer — In this universe, the necromancer retains most of their original definition with one change: they cannot summon spirits. Necromancers deal with the physical side of death and the memories that are tied to living and dead things.

Because a person’s essence is tied to the spirit as well as the physical body, necromancers can dream-hop and manipulate emotions.
