“You’ve already been working there for a week,” I said, struggling to process it aloud. “Now you’ve decided we’re all moving?” Birdie exhaled like she had rehearsed this conversation countless times. “It’s not overnight. I’ve been contemplating it since day one. They offered me stability, growth… something I can actually build on.” I shook my head and began pacing, feeling that standing still would suffocate me. “And what about here? What about us? You’re just going to change everything like it doesn’t matter?”

“It does matter,” she replied, her voice steady and firm. “That’s why I’m telling you instead of just leaving.” That made me pause. “Instead of just leaving?” I echoed, my jaw tightening. “So you were really going to pack up and inform me afterward?” She looked at me for a long moment before answering, and I could sense that I wasn’t going to like her honesty.

“I was afraid you’d try to talk me out of it.” The silence that followed was anything but empty. It was loud and heavy, pressing against my chest. I let out a short laugh, devoid of humor. “So now I’m the reason you kept this from me?” “I didn’t keep it from you,” she quickly corrected. “I was figuring it out. And I did. I’m moving to Orlando. Butch is coming with me.” That last statement changed everything. My head snapped up. “No. Don’t do that.” Birdie didn’t flinch.

She didn’t even blink as if she were afraid of how it would affect me. “He needs stability. I already spoke with the school there. The environment is better for him.” Instinctively, my hand reached for my phone. I didn’t even think—I just reacted. Then I halted mid-motion, realizing I didn’t even know who I was going to call first. My fingers trembled anyway. “So what,” I said, voice tight, “am I just supposed to follow you both now?
