Booklist – Vol 122 No7 March 2026 – Booklist (1)

Former real-world cheerleader Rae, having sacrificed her way out of her favorite book series, is once again trying to find a way to get back to our world, and will have to manipulate the story she knows well to accomplish her goals. She begins to feel that the way to get home is to unravel the love story that she finds herself in, and the most direct way to achieve that end is to get The Emperor to sponsor a tournament where the last person standing will be queen.
Rae is delightfully flawed, not always the most perceptive, and there is a lot more going on than she is able to acknowledge. The richness of the story pro- vides multiple entry points for fans of fantasy and adventure, with a terrific fantasy tale and the meta layer of Rae’s story. The series is cat- nip for genre readers. —Emily Whitmore The Blood Year Daughter.
By G. G. Silverman. Apr. 2026. 222p. Creature, paper, $18.95 (9781951971410); e-book, $9.99 (9781951971427). Silverman gives voice to the brutal, tragic, and transformative experiences of woman- hood in her debut story collection. In the title story, sisters are categorized by their respective years, blood ver- sus milk, a distinction that shapes how society values and treats them.
Ghosts at- tempt to speak in a feminist retelling of Bluebeard; a woman tries to build a hus- band from slaughterhouse feathers, stone, air, and silk; assaulted women are consumed by snakes and transssform (as the author’s spells it) into a single entity capable of delivering long- denied “Justisss.” In one standout, “And the First Shall Go Last,” a young girl takes pride in the “firsts” she achieves, only to see them stripped away by men who sexualize and victimize her. The story’s use of second- person narration pulls the reader into fears that are deeply familiar to AFAB readers.
began as Booklist’s Editor & Publisher in June 2019, and was immediately impressed with the Booklist team. Since then, the team and I, and all of you, have weathered demanding times that brought COVID-19, macroeconomic and fiscal concerns, law enforcement violence, government policy challenges, and so much more.
Through it all, it has been an honor to work with my esteemed colleagues and book professionals, who, day in and day out, work with steadfast dedication and commitment to bring you, our cherished readers, the outstanding reviews and features that help you excel. This will be my last Booklist editorial as Booklist’s Publisher and as ALA’s Senior Director of Publishing & Media. I resigned my position at ALA some time ago and my last day will be March 6. I have bittersweet feelings about this.
Working with the Booklist team has been the greatest honor of my 30- year career in publishing. I started as an administrative assistant way back in the late 1990s with the publishing company Taylor & Francis. For most of my career I worked in academic publishing on peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals. But my degrees are in English literature, and the opportunity to work at ALA, and with Booklist specifically, has been fulfilling and rewarding.
I’m proud of our accomplishments over the past years, despite budget struggles and other pressures. Several years ago, one of ALA’s goals was to broaden outreach to the public, and we responded by launching Booklist Reader for library patrons. That’s just one example of the team’s innovation and responsiveness. You can see the concerted, expert work our team performs in every issue!
And I recommend that all of you and your colleagues be sure to continue to subscribe to and read Booklist and Booklist Reader. After all, as I’ve noted in previous editorials, subscription revenues support ALA and ALA supports libraries in so many ways. I will continue to review for Booklist and perhaps be involved in other ways. The team is just as good as ever, and I’m confident that each month you will continue to receive the best content from Booklist.
I wish you all happiness and success, and I offer tremendous thanks for your support. As a dedicated library patron myself, I have a deep appreciation for all of you and all that you do and for the essential and remarkable services libraries provide to their communities.
