Borrowed Minds: A Consciousness Stolen - Maravich, Michael book cover

I could feel his heart racing against my palm. “Can it wait until morning?” “No. I don’t think it can.” He shifted, and I felt him press something into my hand. A USB drive. “What’s this?” “Everything. Everything I’ve found about Reed. If something happens tomorrow—” “Tomorrow? What’s happening tomorrow?” He was quiet for a long moment.

“I’m meeting with someone. A source inside the Institute. They’re going to give me the proof I need—the final piece of the puzzle.” “Marcus, that sounds dangerous.” “It is. But Claire, what Reed is doing… it’s so much worse than I thought. He’s not just stealing memories. He’s building something. A network of consciousness, all connected, all controlled by him. He wants to live forever, and he doesn’t care how many people he has to consume to do it.” “Then let’s go to the police.

The FBI. Someone who can actually stop him.” “They won’t believe me. Not without proof. And by the time they get the warrants, Reed will have destroyed everything.” He pulled me closer. “The USB drive has a dead man’s switch. If I don’t enter a code every 24 hours, it automatically sends everything to every major news outlet in the country.” “Marcus…” “Promise me you’ll keep it safe. And promise me, whatever happens, you won’t let Reed win.” I should have asked more questions.

Should have demanded answers. Should have tied him to the bed and refused to let him leave. Instead, I kissed him and said, “I promise.” Eight hours later, he was dead. Or so I thought. I open the door. And I remember everything. The memories hit me like a tsunami—not my memories, but my mother’s. Stored somehow in the deepest recesses of my neural architecture, hidden away for thirty years, waiting for this moment. I see Reed, young and handsome and terrifying, explaining his vision for human consciousness to a rapt audience of one—my mother, barely twenty- two, brilliant and naive and desperately in love.

Is it the sum of your memories—every laugh, every tear, every moment of triumph and heartbreak stored in the folds of your brain? Is it the voice in your head that narrates your life, the one you assume belongs to you and you alone?

Or is it something deeper, something science hasn’t yet learned to measure or map? These are the questions that haunted me long before I wrote this book. We live in an age of unprecedented technological advancement. We can edit genes, grow organs in laboratories, and peer into the living brain with machines that would have seemed like magic a generation ago.

Scientists are already experimenting with brain-computer interfaces, memory enhancement, and the digital preservation of consciousness. What was once the realm of science fiction is rapidly becoming science fact.
