Brighter. Worse. Monitor already on. white bed turned down. ultrasound equipment live. a tray of sealed instruments too close to the wall. The smell of sterile wipes strong enough to cut through Nico’s nausea for one brutal second. He sat when they told him to sit because the alternative was folding. Sloane crouched in front of him, fingers already at his wrist.

“How much.” “Not much.” His voice sounded far away. “Pain.” “Yes.” “Sharp.” “Yes.” She stood. “On the bed.” Cassian stayed where he was until Nico looked up and found him. There it was then. The whole thing. Not anger. Not accusation. He looked wrecked. As if someone had cracked the whole private structure of him open just enough for the fear to show through the seams.

Nico got onto the bed because Sloane told him to and because Cassian was looking at him like the room might disappear if he blinked. Everything after that happened too fast and too clearly. Vitals. Questions. The monitor cuff tightening around his arm. white blanket over his legs.

gel cold on skin. the screen turning on with its grainy black-and-white world where his life now apparently existed as abstract shapes and data before it could exist safely anywhere else. Sloane’s face unreadable. Good. terrible. necessary. The pain eased slightly while she scanned. Or maybe his body had simply run out of distinct ways to sound alarm and was now choosing numbness as a more efficient language. He looked at the ceiling. Not the screen. He could feel Cassian’s presence in the room like a second gravity field.

Not touching him. Not speaking. Just there, too close to fear to survive if he opened his mouth too soon. Sloane said, “Look at me.” Nico turned his head. Her voice was flat and exact. “I need you with me.” He nodded once. Then, because the room had finally decided mercy was less efficient than truth, the next cramp hit hard enough to take the breath out of him cleanly. Cassian moved before he could stop himself. One step.
