“But I couldn’t stop three lashes.” I finally look at him. His eyes are dark, heavy with a grief he’ll never speak of. “You stopped the fourth one before it touched me,” I whisper. That earns the faintest ghost of a smile. “Not soon enough.” We sit in silence again, the weight pressing between us like a third presence in the room. Then, quietly, Kaelen rises.

“Take your time. I’ll find something clean for you to wear.” And just like that, he’s gone, leaving only the scent of soap and the echo of what we were behind him. 1kitap1.com/en Kaelen The door clicks softly behind me, but it feels too loud in this eerily quiet room.

I lean back against the wood, closing my eyes for a moment. My hands still shake, not from fear, but from the memory of finding her kneeling with those gashes on her back. I should have been faster. I should have felt the shift in the shadows when she was taken. She should never have been left alone. I knew I couldn’t trust my court, and look at what giving them a few minutes of my presence being absent got her. I force my eyes open and push off the door.

My chambers feel too small, too quiet, even though the fire crackles in the hearth and servants are bustling in the hallways beyond my shut bedroom door. None of it matters. Not when she’s in my bath and her skin is torn with her heart full of doubt. I can see it in her eyes. She doesn’t trust me, not really. And I don’t blame her. I stride across the room, pulling open the wardrobe.

She needs something soft, something that won’t bother the wounds, even though they’ll probably be almost fully healed by the end of the bath. I run my hand across the silks and cottons until I find a midnight-blue shirt that’s long enough. I hesitate before pulling it down. This shirt was actually bought for her long ago, before everything crumbled.

My hands smack against the rough stone flooring. It’s jagged, cutting my palms and making my blood drip out and pour across it in small trails. “Kaelen, please…” My voice cracks. “Let me go. You know your father will kill me if you take me back there.” I keep my eyes low, fixed on the toe of his boot. I can’t look at him. Not yet. It’s been years since I saw him up close. If I do now, I’ll break, or worse, I’ll beg for his mercy and love.

“Get up,” he says, his voice flat and cold. Slowly, I let my eyes drag up the length of his leather-clad legs, and past the hardened lines of his belt. My gaze shifts to the right, to his hand. His fingers are curled, and the shadows coil like serpents, ready to strike. “So, you want to carry out the sentence yourself,” I mutter, rising on shaky legs, but it’s not fast enough. “You’ve trained under those who can break mate bonds, then, just for this moment.

I always wondered if you would.” His hand clamps around my left bicep hard. He yanks me upright as if I weigh nothing. “I said, get up, Vespera.” A low growl works its way up my throat. Even though I’m about to meet my death, I don’t want to hear that name.“Don’t call me that.

It’s Wisp now.” Kaelen doesn’t flinch. Instead, he reaches out with his opposite hand, fingers sliding beneath my chin, tilting my face toward his. “Look at me, Vespera.” I clamp my eyes shut, refusing. “I don’t want to,” I hiss, heat rising in my chest. “Not when you won’t even use the name I chose when I left this cursed place behind.”
