Bridal Trap – Rena McKay

In the haliway a man went by pushing a cart loaded with dirty trays and dishes. A light pulsed softly over a doorway. Two doctors went by discussing the medical convention in San Francisco. _ All these people just going about their jobs, Robyn thought wonderingly, and others were dying. . . . She lifted her eyes to Trev’s. She thought his were suspi- ciously moist, but he looked away before she could be sure.
“That was very thoughtful of you to arrange for someone to care for her plants. I know it made her feel better.” _ His jaw tightened. He propelled her to one side to let an aide pushing a cart of fresh linens pass by. “I’ll get someone,” he said briefly. “So that was all just a lie too!” she said with bitter disillusionment. ‘“Isn’t anything about you real?” He lifted a dark eyebrow. “Were all the things you said real?”
he retorted. “No, of course not, but—” She floundered help- lessly. _ “They almost sounded real. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were madly in love with me.” He laughed humorlessly. ‘In fact, you really gave a great perform- ance. All that flowery description of the wedding, right down to the orchid corsage. Sounded as if you’d been planning it for years. I’m sure you could win the award of the year for ‘Best Performance in a Hospital.’” » Robyn stared at him angrily. And she had thought perhaps he really felt something when he was in there with his grandmother.
“I’ll put it with my ‘Nicest Girl in Town’ award,” she said sarcastically. – “You mustn’t be greedy,” he chided. She gave him one more scathing look and then 4 “Let go of me. I’m going home.” She tried to pul 1 pewey but his hand only tightened painfully around her “Not yet. There’s a little job we have to do first.” “Now what?” she said bitterly. “Find some innocent ___ kids and tell them a few lies just for the fun of it?” fe patie ignored her outburst.
“Now,” he said m ee “we get a ring.” Bae = ‘2 “c-20 ie eee ee ne ‘Ler et J ae Vege a +) ze va Chapter Five Robyn protested, arguing that there was no point in carrying things that far, but Trev was grimly deter- mined. Finally, shrugging, Robyn gave in. They went to Redwood Valley’s only jewelry store. Robyn didn’t make even a pretense of being interested as the salesman brought out trays of glittering rings. She tapped her fingers on the glass display case, impatient for this ridiculous farce to be over.
No, no, that wasn’t true, she reminded herself hastily, because when it was over that meant Mrs. Barrone would be gone too. No, all she meant was that she was impatient for the farce here in the jewelry store to end.
: “Not a real marriage,” she replied coldly. – _ His lips twisted. “Don’t you have what nice, _ sensible girls always want? The license, the _ ceremony, the ring on your finger?” _ Robyn gasped at the implication that she was somehow bought and paid for. She struggled _ to free herself from his grip. “JT don’t understand this,” he said.
“I know that you’re not exactly indifferent to me.” As if to prove it, he trailed tantalizing fingertips across her lips and she trembled beneath his touch. ‘Right now I can feel you struggling not to respond.” It was true. It took every ounce of her ¥, strength to hold her body rigid and unyielding, to resist that overpowering temptation to melt against him.
