My days were heavy with sadness, and I found myself withdrawing from the world. Instead of celebrating, I chose to work on both Christmas Day and New Year’s, not to escape the pain, but to give purpose to it. As a mental health advocate supporting children who long for a sense of belonging, I poured my heart into filling the emotional gaps they carried.

In serving them, I was reminded that even in grief, we can still be a source of light for someone else. I deeply miss the days spent with my loved ones, yet I remain grateful for the memories that continue to live within me. Those memories have opened my eyes to the many individuals who face the holidays alone—those who wake up in silence, who carry invisible tears, and who quietly pray for comfort during what is meant to be a joyful season.

The world is surrounded by heavy and lonely hearts, especially during times when togetherness is so strongly emphasized. In moments like these, the simplest acts of kindness become the most powerful. A genuine smile, a warm hug, a thoughtful conversation, or even a moment of acknowledgment can be life-giving. You never truly know how much your presence may mean to someone who feels unseen, unheard, or forgotten.

During the holidays, these small gestures can make the difference between despair and hope, between isolation and connection. Grief during the holidays will continue to exist and, in many ways, will grow as the world evolves and loss becomes a shared human experience. Yet within that reality lies an opportunity—to become more compassionate, more understanding, and more intentional with love. Let empathy be your language. Let kindness be your action. And let love be your greatest gift, capable of reaching even the most broken heart and reminding it that it is not alone.

Grief During The Holidays K.Griffin A story of survival, release, and emotional restoration Kimberly Yvette Griffin My story delves into the traumas I navigated during my childhood, marked by profound emotions that chipped away at my self-worth.

The trauma she endured has always weighed heavily on my heart, especially each time she opened up about feeling lost and uncertain in relation to her biological mother. The separation that altered the course of her life, forcing her to be raised by others, left wounds that never fully healed. Hearing her recount those experiences revealed not only her suffering, but also her strength, resilience, and the silent battles she carried while becoming the woman and mother she was meant to be.

5 BULLY MOTIVATIONAL MAGAZINE VOL XI What first compelled you to investigate the South Carolina roots of Rosa Lee Dorsey-Frederick, and how did this journey begin for you personally? As her only daughter, I grew up listening to my mother recount fragments of her childhood in the South—stories filled with sorrow, pain, and unanswered questions. Whenever conversations turned toward her parents or her upbringing, her emotions would surface in a way that told me there was more beneath the surface than she ever fully shared.

One memory that remains vivid is spending a summer vacation with her in the early 1970s. At that time, her adoptive mother was suffering from dementia and other serious health conditions, and my mother devoted herself to caring for her during her final days. That trip would be our last connection to her hometown.

Although returning was one of her deepest wishes, life, family disagreements, and unresolved hurt prevented it. Over time, that disappointment turned into resentment, and she never went back. In 2019, my world shifted completely.
