California Adventure Sassy Senior Sleuths 4 – Kathryn Mykel

Where do we begin? It’s not like there’s a manual for how to solve a locked room murder mystery . . . Wait, was there one? Did I miss it?” Nona questioned, clearly out of her element here. She was more of a ‘let’s run with a wild theory and see where it takes us’ kind of sleuth.
Everyone behind them had gone quiet while the two amateur sleuths stood at the far end of the room and talked it out. Pauline turned and said, “I say it begins with whoever or whatever is behind that door.” She pointed a long slender finger towards the closed door. All was silent save for a collective audible gasp from the crowd. “Wait just a minute,” Nona chimed in. “Everyone knows that if we all step into that room, we are all going to get locked in there, or some of us go in, some will get locked in and some will get locked out.”
Nona raised her eyebrows and imperceptibly put her foot down on the idea. She didn’t always get credit for her movie antics and gut reactions, but she knew she was right about this one. “Okay. You and I will go in and the rest of the group will remain out here.” Nona said, nodding to Pauline.
They continued their conversation as though there was no one else in the foyer with them. “No, you can’t leave us,” a young man said from the crowd. Though eight other people didn’t really count as a ‘crowd.’ “Alright, let’s think this out. We go in, they stay here.
Then what?” Nona asked. Pauline turned to Raúl and scowled at him, “When do they unlock the doors and shut off the jelly phone thing?” Nona giggled. “Jam the phones, Pauline.” “They don’t,” Raúl said. “Well, at least not until we make our way through the tunnels and out the back exit to the cemetery. Once you exit from the room,” he pointed to the door to his right this time, “there’s a mechanism that triggers one door at a time, and once we leave the back exit, all of the doors and shutters will unlock and open, and the phone signal will resume.”
“More good news,” Pauline said with her hands on her hips. “So we need to go through that door to get out?” She raised her hand and pointed to the door on the right. Raúl hung his head and said in a barely audible voice, “Yes, the kitchen, but it is locked.” Nona paced along the wall a few feet. “First, our priority should be getting out of here. And since none of us killed the person, I think we are all at risk of the actual murderer.
Second, we have to deal with the body. Many of these fine folks are not accustomed to seeing dead people in real life. It will be a shock to them.”

★★★★★ Engaging and amusing — the 2 heroines prove that age is no limitation! The format was enjoyable too. Having short encounters together let the stories be personality and character-forward.
