Department of Interior spokesperson insisted the chemi- cal compound would have no “harmful side effects” to marine life or the environment. Trump warned Monday that anyone caught defacing the water basin or the National Mall would face years in prison. The grass on the National Mall was also defaced with giant etch- ings of the numbers “86 47.” The numerical phrase came into prominence after former FBI Di- rector James Comey posted a pic- ture of the numbers written in seashells on Instagram in May 2025.
“Of the MANY Statues and Fountains that we rebuilt, reno- vated, cleaned, and fixed, the only one that was Vandalized was the Reflecting Pool, which is being taken care of, ASAP!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Please remember that there is a 10 year prison sentence for the de- struction, or even the attempted destruction, of such things — Which will be fully enforced!” By ANNA YOUNG, and SAM CHAMBERLAIN President Trump claimed Mon- day that vandals armed with a “box cutter” and fertilizer wrecked his renovation of the Lin- coln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which is now being drained for additional repairs ahead of the Fourth of July.
“We have a, I think, 290-300 foot slit right through it — probably a box cutter or a knife of some kind,” Trump said in the Oval Of- fice — rebuffing reporters who in- credulously asked how such van- dalism of the pool’s new liner could be accomplished. “We didn’t have a lot of [police officers] then. Who would think that somebody would go into a pool and take a knife and start cut- ting it?
. . . Let’s put it this way, when you have . . . a 350-foot slit from one end to the other, you think that’s proof?” Trump’s $14.8 million renova- tion project at the iconic site grab- bed headlines in recent days when his “American flag blue” redesign turned a nasty green due to algae. Trump suggested the algae (above) was the work of vandals — after he repeatedly attacked prior presidents for tolerating the sun-loving aquatic organism.
Dead duck found “They put, somebody said, fer- tilizer in the water. If you put fer- tilizer in the water, you get algae, but somebody said they might have put fertilizer. They did something to create the algae,” he said. A dead duckling was also found floating in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Sunday.

More than 12,000 people have signed a petition urging officials to move or rethink Big Bear’s an- nual “4th of July Fireworks Spec- tacular.” The petition says the booming display could disturb the area’s fa- mous bald eagle family as two ea- glets approach a critical stage of de- velopment. But local busi- ness owners say that after another disappointing win- ter with little snowfall, the Fourth of July holi- day represents one of the biggest tour- ism weekends of the year and a chance to recover some of the lost revenue.
At the center of the controversy are Jackie and Shadow, the celebrity bald eagles whose nest has attracted more than a million viewers through a 24-hour livestream operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley. This year’s concerns focus on Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets, Sandy and Luna, which hatched in early April after the eagles pro- duced a rare second clutch of eggs following the loss of their first nest earlier this year.
Petition organizers say the birds will be about 12 weeks old on July 4 and could be vulnerable to sud- den explosions and bright flashes as they continue developing flight skills ahead of fledging. “Last year’s concerns centered primarily on disturbance to adult eagles. This year’s concern is far more serious,” organizers wrote. The petition notes more than 40,000 people signed a similar ap- peal last year and calls on officials to relocate the fireworks launch site away from eagle habitat, consider alternatives such as drone shows and consult with wildlife experts.
“We cannot claim surprise if a preventable tragedy occurs after repeated warnings, documented concerns, and overwhelming pub- lic support for protecting these birds,” the petition states.
