Cat And Mouse – Sara Christene

I was on my feet, so someone must have kept me upright but… something was wrong. “Good,” a voice said behind me. “I was worried you were a night owl and we’d be waiting for hours.” I spun around, and in the blue glow stood Alaric Montague with a woman I didn’t recognize. She had long black hair falling sleekly over a purple blouse and darker purple cardigan. Her features were strong, her eyes sharp, and because she was so striking, I was sure I had never met her before.
Alaric looked the same as I’d last seen him, though maybe a little more disheveled and blue-tinted in the strange light. “Wait—” I glanced around the room… which wasn’t really a room. I didn’t see any walls, but I didn’t see anything else either. It was dark, and the hazy blue glow stretched on as far as I could see.
“Wait,” I said again, taking a step back. “Where are we?” Alaric cleared his throat, lacing his hands before him. “Forgive me for the imposition, but only in dreams can we speak without anyone spying on us.” My wide eyes flicked to the woman beside him as realization set in. “You have dream magic?” I asked. It was rare, but not so rare so as to be unheard of.
According to my mother, my great, great aunt had dream magic. The woman nodded, but didn’t speak. Her eyes were a little tight around the edges, like it was taking a great deal of concentration to hold the meeting together. I looked at Alaric. “I’m sleeping?” His brow furrowed. “I would assume so. Unless someone hit you over the head.” I winced. The locket. It must have zapped me so hard that I passed out. Which meant everyone would be trying to revive me and we might not have much time.
I stepped closer. “We don’t have long, so whatever you need to say, say it.” Fortunately, Alaric didn’t ask questions. “A colleague of mine was murdered. Beatrice Romero. I believe it has something to do with the plague of darkness sweeping through the Ministry. I want you to find out who did it.” We all jumped as a black cat popped up between us.

We hadn’t yet seen the end of winter, but we were inching ever closer. The quality of the light was a sign of that, along with the glowing pink bulbs and giant cut-out hearts bedecking Main Street. Glitter was everywhere, and we would all be finding it in the darnd- est of places for weeks to come. That’s right, love was in the air, or at least the commercialized holiday version of it.
But who was I to complain? I put another heart-shaped sugar cookie into the display. The icing was pink, the sprinkles a darker pink with a hint of dreaded glitter. I did enjoy a good theme, and at least the edible glitter dissolved in water and wasn’t a hazard to the environment. Other cookies were shaped like white envelopes sealed with red icing hearts, and red roses with 3D petals painted on by Elliot, who had a lot more patience than me for the small artistic touches.
The rest of the case was already stocked with cherry-filled donuts with vanilla icing, and rose and strawberry scones with candied rose petals. I had even added a dash of red food coloring to the usual bagels and chocolate chip cookies to give them a pinkish hue. Steam erupted behind me as Evie showed Maggie how to get the espresso machines going.
Now that Maggie was moving to Twilight Hollow full-time, she wanted a part-time job.
