Chloe smiled. “Good morning, Estelle.” “Good morning, Chloe. Good morning, Cookie.” Estelle grinned at them. “It’s a beautiful day.” Cookie smiled as I went to the cash register to ring up Estelle’s ice cream order. “Good morning, Estelle,” she said. “How are you doing?” She set the tub of ice cream she was carrying into the freezer and turned to her. “I’m doing fine, Cookie,” Estelle said. “I’m so sorry about what happened last week.” Cookie nodded soberly.

“Thank you. I’m sure Noah will get things sorted out soon.” She glanced at me. “I’m sure he will,” I agreed. I rang up Estelle’s ice cream, and after chatting a few more moments, she left. A moment later the bell over the door rang again as Charlene Douglas walked through it. I smiled. “Hi, Charlene.” Now was our chance to find out what she knew. She smiled wanly as she approached the counter. Charlene was around 5’6” tall and thin, with shoulder length blonde hair.

There were so many things that I wanted to ask her about her former boyfriend, Charlie Dade. “Hi Maddie.” She nodded at Chloe and Cookie. “Charlene, I’m so sorry about Charlie,” I said. “Charlene, I’m sorry too,” Chloe said. Cookie nodded. “I am, too.” Charlene took a deep breath. “Thanks. Charlie and I had broken up a while ago, but I wasn’t over him. I miss him.” My heart went out to her.

“It must be so hard. I can’t imagine what you’re going through.” Tears came to her eyes, and she blinked them away. “Charlie was a good guy. The only person I can think of who might want to hurt him was Ashley. I know that probably sounds crazy, but the two of them fought all the time.

Charlie told me all about it when we were dating. That’s why it was so devastating when he went back to her. Why would he want to go back to her if she was hurting him?” I shook my head. “It must have been so hard when he told you he was going back to someone who had hurt him.”

She closed her eyes and nodded. When she opened them, there were tears again. “It was crazy. I just couldn’t understand it. I didn’t stop by for ice cream—it’s taken me this long to come in here because it just makes me sick thinking how he died here. But I wondered if any of you have any idea why he would have been here that night.” I shook my head. “No, we have no idea. I was hoping you might know.” She sighed.

“Maddie.” “Huh?” I whispered groggily. “Get up or you’ll be late for school.” Mom. The smell of pancakes woke me, and I was smiling before opening my eyes. Was I still dreaming? And what was that? I sniffed the air. Bacon? If there were pancakes and bacon, there had to be a tall glass of orange juice, too. And maybe even some scrambled eggs.

My stomach growled at the thought. I blindly reached for my cat, Oliver, but his spot on the bed where he normally slept was empty. I opened my eyes to look for him, but he was nowhere to be seen. And then I remembered. The smell of bacon and pancakes wasn’t a dream. My parents were here visiting for the week. I grinned and jumped out of bed, dressing quickly, and then pulling my black hair back in a low ponytail.

Today was going to be a great day. I brushed my teeth while looking in the mirror, and decided to skip the makeup.
