Christmas At Floras House – Freya North

All that’s left for her to do, before Christmas can truly start, is collect the turkey from An Clachan and a sausage roll for her lunch just now. She holds the door for an elderly lady just leaving and they wish each other season’s greetings. Inside, she can hear Shona singing along to the pa-ra-pa-pa-pam chorus of Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy.

The girl is up a rickety ladder sticking a fallen paper-chain back into position with a nub of Blu Tack. Morag notices that Shona’s stockings have holes all over them. She knows Shona well so she assumes these are intentional but she does wonder how on earth she puts them on. ‘Do they pay you danger money for climbing ladders, Shona Morrison?’ ‘Oh Morag don’t make me laugh – the left side wobbles as it is.

Hold it will you?’ Back on terra firma, Shona beams. ‘You all done then, Morag? You sure the Hotel won’t fall down without you there holding it all together?’ ‘Well if it does I won’t know because I intend to be in a food coma while keeping half an eye on Julie Andrews running around the hills singing on the TV.’ ‘You’re funny!

Your turkey’s out the back – will you watch the till? I’ll just fetch it for you. You’re lucky I didn’t sell it five minutes ago – bless her heart.’ ‘Bless whose heart?’ ‘Tourist. Older lady – she’s here with her husband for Christmas.’ ‘I think we passed each other on my way in.

Grey hair all over the place? Even older than me?’ ‘Aye – that’s her. She’s been in every day of her holidays, has a wee chat to herself as she shops. Came in just now asking for turkey.’ ‘On Christmas Eve?’ ‘Aye – seems they’d forgotten the whole meal – she bought stuffing and gravy and two pots of trifle.

I felt bad about the turkey; all I had was a packet of slices, or yours!’ ‘It’s a wonder they didn’t book at the hotel – we’ve one table free now. Last minute cancellation.’ ‘I wouldn’t mind Christmas dinner at the hotel – anything to avoid my mum’s overcooked sprouts.’ ‘Your mother is famous for her overcooked sprouts, Shona Morrison.’ ‘Every year we all sneak them to the dog – and then we pay the price with his farts.’

‘Sounds not unlike my Iain.’ ‘Morag – what are you like! Let me fetch your turkey – you watch the till. You watch old Donald there. Donald – I’ve told Morag to keep an eye on you!’ ‘Och – that is a fine bird, Shona!’ ‘Aye – so it is. You have a wonderful Christmas, Morag.

I’ll see you on the other side.’ ‘Where’s the cranberry sauce?’ ‘Oh, we’re out of it – I sold the last jar to the English lady who wanted turkey.’ ‘You sold my cranberry sauce – to an English woman?’
