It was driving me slowly insane, not being certain, and that was how I found myself at the doctor’s office during my lunch break, waiting for the results of a pregnancy test. There were home tests, but I wasn’t willing to trust my fate to a little piece of plastic from the drugstore.

I needed another person to look me in the eye and tell me what I was pretty sure I already knew. The doctor had already taken the urine test, and I was just waiting for the results. They’d told me it would only be a few minutes. I realized in that moment that I wasn’t actually completely certain what I was hoping for. It should have been a negative; I had always thought I didn’t want children.

The truth was, I was really afraid of the power that an alpha would have over me if I had his baby. In shifter society, alphas had all the power over their offspring, and thus their mates. If Stefan had impregnated me, he could control my life.

I didn’t want to be locked away and kept as some sort of walking baby incubator. But a child? Stefan’s child? Those ideas weren’t as horrifying as they once had been. Stefan was sweet, and caring, and part of me could imagine a life with him, a life with a baby in it. It was just a fantasy, I told myself. The moment Stefan found out he was a father, he would change. I had heard of it happening. He would become possessive of me, controlling; he would dictate my every move until the child was born, and then be right on me to make another.

It was far from the normal, human life I had once dreamed of. I had no idea what I would do if it were a positive. Stefan would smell the pregnancy on me. I wouldn’t be able to hide it, but I couldn’t give him the reins to my life. I had just started a new job. I was finally starting to make progress on the project I’d been assigned to.

A baby would change everything. I was completely zoned out when they said my name, and the nurse came over to tap my shoulder. “Tyler Stone?” I was shocked back into focus, staring up at her. “Oh, hi, sorry, yeah. I’m coming.” I tried not to babble at the poor nurse as she brought me back into the examination room and told me the doctor would be right with me. The doctor was young, and blonde, and not at all what I would have expected, but she was a wolf, and she was treating me well so far.

I trusted her more than I might have trusted another man to be sympathetic. She could at least understand what it was like to have one’s bodily autonomy threatened by the possibility of a child. “So, doc? What is it?

That morning, I’d felt strange. An itching, clawing in my stomach, or just a little lower, had distracted me enough that I’d missed my stop on the metro. I settled down and opened my emails for the day, stalling a little. I had work to do on an upcoming project, but engineers were paid salary, and my preliminary sketches weren’t even due until the end of the week. I just had to get through the day, try to get something done, but I was restless.

Julia scooted her rolling chair over to me from her own desk. She was G-Tech’s first official wolf shifter engineer. Segregation was still the norm, but more and more, previously human-only companies were hiring token wolf shifters to prove their tolerance. Beta wolves were considered the safest, and closest to human. It was hilarious to me that anyone considered Julia safe. “Hey, you’re late,” she scolded playfully. “What’s up?” I shook my head silently, peering at my computer screen and flicking two emails into the junk folder.

The next seemed like it was actually important, and I clicked on it, but Julia poked me in the arm with her ball- point pen before I got a chance to read it, and I turned to glare at her. “If you don’t stop that, you’re going to regret it.

Maybe you could try minding your own business, you know? I’m fine, seriously. I just missed my stop on the metro.” She laughed.“Daydreaming about the weekend? Me too. This tester project they’ve got me on is so boring I might die.
