I put the coat rack from the lake side door next to the Christmas tree, and then created the dress for Elle, inside a travel bag, itself inside Christmas paper, and hanging from the rack. I’d already done a present for Houdini in two places. One was a new cat tree in the secondary living room on Elle’s side of the joined house, near the beach side door, and the other was a package of new toys under the tree.

She stirred just before eight, saw me still lying next to her but awake, and smiled at me. “Good morning,” she said. “This is different.” “Good morning,” I repeated, “and yes. I think this is the first time I’ve woken up before you.” “Must have been the late hour before we went to sleep. You woke at your normal time then?” “That I did. Houdini was on me as usual, so he kept me busy for a bit. Then I just took the opportunity to watch you sleep.”

I grinned at her. “Not my best look.” “You always look good. Are we getting up? Or staying here all day.” Her momentary frown changed into a smile. “We better get up.
