Color Design Workbook – Adams Morioka

Panels and continuous table-height surfaces flow through the gallery, unify- ing the diverse elements and their display conditions. The subtle tones of the exhibi- tion’s design reinforces the concept of “re-seeing” be- yond the blatant or obvious content of an image. Durfee Regn Sandhaus Color Design Workbook The dominant color used is a rich dark red/maroon, chosen because it is earthy, bold, and vibrant. It reso- nates with the event’s focus on culture, ethnology, and society.
The boldness of the maroon grabs attention without being overwhelm- ing, especially as it is bal- anced by black bars and the photos themselves. Design Firm: Hello Design “Culture Shock Week” Website Interface Design Client: The National Geographic Channel Color Systems The National Geographic Channel sought to promote its special week- long programming event called “Cul- ture Shock Week” to drive television tune-in and attract new viewers to the channel. To help promote the on-air programming, an online photography contest was developed.
Users submitted their own photos from around the world, revealing both foreign cultures and diversity within the United States. “Culture Shock Week” unveiled ta- boos throughout the world by looking at forbidden rites and rituals in many cultures. An online identity and visu- al system was created to present this unique programming in a compelling user experience. The website featured an easy-to-use interface that was templated for reuse with the “Culture Shock Week” photo gallery and future promotional sites for the client.
The site is bold and visu- ally stimulating, with rich beautiful National Geo- graphic photography that underscores the fascinating cultures, peoples, and rituals everywhere. A simple, scrollable inter- face allows users to browse additional information and images in a visual way, The navigational system for the photo gallery appears as a series of vertical bars be- low the photo box.
Thumb- nail views that enlarge when selected allow users to browse as well as look at an image up close. This design encourages interaction with gallery content.
