Something flickered in Blaze’s eyes that I couldn’t quite read. Whatever the look was it made my breath hitch. Maybe I was reading too much into it but if I had a gun to my head and was forced to surmise what the look was, I would have said lust. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

I wouldn’t even blink. That was how badly I didn’t want to break eye contact. “I was going to offer to give you a massage, but I don’t want to come off like a pussy hound that’s preying on you right after you just ended a relationship.” His words confirmed my assumption, but I was still somehow caught off guard.

I’d never been the type of person to casually sleep around. I had only ever been with men that I was in a relationship with. So far, playing it safe hadn’t gotten me a happy ending. Even while I was insecure and not liking the way I looked, I knew seeking men out for validation was nasty work. Replacing Jeremiah with sneaky links and men just as bad or worse than him wasn’t the way to heal. But dammit I needed an orgasm, and I preferred one that wasn’t self-induced.

“I wouldn’t think you were preying on me. Just honest. I can’t act like there’s not an attraction here. And we’re both adults.” The way my heart began to race was insane. I was feeding into something that I wasn’t quite sure I was ready for. “You have to promise not to use me as a rebound.” The fact that he appeared serious as a heart attack made me laugh.

“Rebound? No. I’m not thinking about a relationship. I know I can’t get over my ex by having sex with, going out with, or conversing with another man. I have to sit in my heartbreak and move on from it.

It didn’t even matter to me that I probably looked like a lush. I had a reason to celebrate. Before I could pick my drink up, my sister, Melody grabbed her glass and lifted it in the air. “To healthy lungs and being able to walk up the stairs without dying, bitch.”

Placing a fist over my mouth, I cackled like a witch. “You are sick!” “But did I lie?” “No, you did not.” Lifting my glass, I clinked it with hers. “To healthy lungs.” As a toddler, I was diagnosed with asthma. As a teenager, I began to have really bad seasonal allergies. Aside from that, strong scents like certain perfumes and other fragrances triggered my allergies which then triggered the asthma.

Two and a half months ago, I almost died when I couldn’t breathe one day, and my inhaler wasn’t helping. By the time the ambulance arrived, my lips were turning blue. At the ER I was diagnosed with pneumonia. It just so happened that I got pneumonia amid a bad allergy flare up.

The pollen was out in record numbers. All those things combined almost killed me. I was in the hospital for four days on oxygen. I was prescribed antibiotics, steroids, and an inhaler to take every day rather than just a rescue inhaler for emergencies. After almost three months on the steroids, I had gained twenty-five pounds, and I absolutely hated it. Before the steroids, I wasn’t necessarily small. At five foot six, I weighed 165 pounds.

Currently, I was at 190. It was the biggest that I’d ever been in my life. There was no use in trying to diet while on the medication, and it made my appetite increase tenfold. Finally, I had taken the last dose a few days before, and the following week, I was starting with a personal trainer. My ideal weight was 150. I didn’t want to be a stick.
