Syndra clutched his arm, fingers digging in. “Make it stop, please.” “I can’t,” he ground out. “This magic is more powerful than ours. Something that has been building for a long time.” Oakley stumbled backward. “You’re glowing. Both of you. Like, a lit fuse about to blow. What is happening?” Tamsin could hardly hear him. A battle waged inside his skull. Something was pushing them away. The forest was pulling them forward. He didn’t know why.

He didn’t know what. Only that the pressure was unbearable. Light seared behind his eyes. A flash. A sigil he couldn’t place. A door of stone he did not remember ever seeing. But it felt familiar. Terrifyingly familiar. Syndra cried out, shaking, her forehead pressed to his shoulder. “Tamsin, what is this, what are we supposed to—” “I don’t know, ” he choked. Pain, harder, like a fist closing around his mind. Then—a snap. Air rushed back into his lungs. The pressure vanished as abruptly as it had come, leaving a cold, ringing silence in its wake.

Tamsin collapsed to his knees, sweat dripping down his temples. Syndra gasped beside him, trembling. Oakley stood frozen several feet away, pale as moonlight. “What the hell was that?” Oakley whispered. Tamsin wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “A memory trying to surface.” “Something you forgot?” Oakley asked. Tamsin closed his eyes.

The truth chilled him. “Appears that way,” he said softly. “It felt . . . old.” And then came the answer. Spoken, just as they had been before, “Not the former king. Not the former queen. Not the carefully trained almost- warrior. The daughters. Elora. Cassie. One of dark and one of light. They will set us free.” Tamsin felt the blood drain from his face. Syndra clutched his arm. Oakley staggered back. “Elora,” he whispered. Tamsin’s heart plummeted. “And Cassie,” Syndra breathed.

Cassie was already awake.

~ Rezer ezer stood across the street from Enigma, half-shrouded by the dim glow of the shop’s lit-up sign. Through the wide front window, Lisa moved in her nightly rhythm, wiping the counter, adjusting the crystals, humming a tune he didn’t know but found himself waiting for. She did it every evening. Always the same. Predictable, comforting, maddening. He’d watched her for six months. Long enough for the habit to feel like need.

Six months since Lorsan’s fall. Six months since Triktapic had reclaimed the Book of the Elves and the throne. Six months since Rezer had begun writing her. The last card, his final attempt to draw her out, still echoed in his mind, the words simple but weighted: You stood me up, Sunshine. I don’t take rejection well. He smiled faintly, though there was no humor in it. The truth was, he didn’t know why he cared whether she answered or not.

There had always been something missing inside him, something hollow. For centuries, that emptiness had just existed, quiet, constant. But since the first time he’d seen Lisa Scott, it had begun to stir. Not fade, not heal—just move, like it recognized something in her that it wanted. Maybe it wasn’t her light that called to him. Maybe it was the way she carried it, steady, human, and without arrogance. There was strength in that kind of gentleness.

And maybe that was what drew him, what kept him coming back. Lisa was not like other humans. She couldn’t be. She’d held the love of a dark elf once, and from what Rezer had heard, that had been no small feat. Dark elves didn’t love easily, or selflessly. But she had inspired both. He stepped off the curb, crossing the empty street until he stood just outside the window.
