No more glum accounts of life and no more intrigue. He would be taking a couple of weeks off work to go to the sunny Canary Islands with Helen for a holiday. He didn’t particularly relish the thought of this with the crowded beaches, cheap greasy food, and sweating. The high temperatures didn’t agree with Jack, but he would suffer it for Helen’s sake; she loved every second of it. He would also be taking a few days off from work to move to their new house. They had found a nice semi-detached, three- bedroom house in an area they both liked, and Jack was feeling easier about the increased financial commitment.

The two hundred thousand pounds that his father had left him had been deposited into an account in his own name; he could not let Helen see it. Life was good. Enough money, an improved relationship with Helen, and he could settle back into his routine. Cedric was his usual self and didn’t mention a word about Jelly or anything at all connected with this other world that existed.

Despite the summer days, the evenings in the pub with his mates, his new house, and a sweet relationship with Helen, Jack started to feel empty inside. He put it down to missing his father and didn’t think any more of it. But the feeling grew, much to his annoyance, and it started to dawn on him how he was telling himself a story about his life. Everything he wanted he had got and the things he wanted were bracketed by his own design.

Nothing should enter his life other than comfort, ease, and a set of well- defined behaviors, and a big part of him was determined to keep it that way no matter what the cost. To hell with this nagging emptiness, he would not change his life. The weeks passed. The holiday was everything he expected: crowded beaches, greasy food, and unbearable heat. He came back from the holiday feeling aggravated, and Helen had noticed it.

“You haven’t been to see Jelly for some time Jack. Is he okay?” Helen asked, not just out of curiosity, but because she could see Jack’s deteriorating mood. He was less affectionate and more impatient with her, and she didn’t like it. “He’s fine. I don’t think I’ll be seeing him anymore; he’s got other people visiting him,” Jack replied in a curt manner. Helen thought it was a shame, he was such a kind old man, and she felt he filled in for Jack’s father; she knew how much Jack missed his father.

“Oh, that’s such a shame.

There are tens of thousands of them, and apart from providing a helpful distraction from the fact that we die, suffer, and live in total confusion, I can’t see they provide a helpful function. So, maybe this book will fall into the same category, and its somewhat brutal style will amuse for a while until it doesn’t, and then the reader will move on to find more pleasant, sunlit pastures.

If that is the case, then there will have been a fair exchange. You pass on some of your hard- earned cash, and in return, you are amused for a while. The contents of this book range from mildly unpleasant to downright disgusting.
