Obviously it hasn’t been sexual, but it sounded like it…even so, why should that make me feel flushed? To distract myself, I took a bite of my own asparagus. It was pretty damn good, though it didn’t make me moan. Still, I nodded in agreement with Justin as he continued to munch on his. “Sorry.” Justin stood up, and he started pulling off his shirt.

“It actually is kinda hot in here.” He wasn’t going shirtless, but just taking off the long-sleeved shirt that he had on over his white undershirt. But in doing so, it did ride up and show his stomach, and—holy shit. Justin had abs. Like, real abs, not just from being skinny, but from working out.

“Probably from the oven being on for so long,” I said, my voice coming out as kind of a croak while Justin shrugged his shirt over his head and slung it over the back of his chair. He tugged his undershirt back down to cover the unbelievable muscles of his stomach, and sat down again. Justin brought a potato to his mouth, popped it in, and then looked at me. “You all right?” he asked. That was when I realized I had just been staring at him, my fork frozen above my plate.

“Um.” I coughed, getting my body working again and spearing a potato of my own. “Yeah. Do you want me to open a window?” “Nah, it’s fine now with the shirt off.” Justin flashed me a smile. “You can ditch yours if you need to.” It was just a joke. I should have laughed easily at it, maybe told him to fuck off, but none of that came to me like it normally would have.

Instead, that warmth and color came back into my face, and I just shook my head at him, feeling strange. “Just fucking with you,” Justin offered, cutting into his chicken. “I know,” I said, though I wished my words sounded more convincing. “So, where do you learn how to cook this?” Justin swallowed a bite of chicken, giving me an appreciative nod.

“Because I didn’t know you cooked at all.” I walked him through my little adventure of figuring out the online recipe, mentioning how hard it was to find his cutting board, which made him laugh. “I never really use it, either,” he said. “I kind of forgot it was there.”

And it seemed like the shitty things just kept happening one after the other. I was at a loss. I didn’t want to call my parents for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being that I was 23 years old and had only technically just moved out of their house when I had graduated college less than a year ago.

I wanted falling back on them to be a last, last resort. So I called Justin. “Shit, Brett,” he said to me over the phone, sighing. “That sucks.” “It really does.” I sat back on my couch, in the apartment that I wouldn’t be able to live in for much longer. And as simple as Justin’s response was, I appreciated it, and I appreciated that about him. He wasn’t the kind of guy who would sugarcoat stuff, or tell me all the reasons it doesn’t suck, or even focus on making some kind of a plan for when disaster struck.

He would agree with me, and he would commiserate. He was exactly the kind of guy you were glad to have as a best friend. “And here’s part two,” I said. “Uh-oh. There’s a part two?” “Yeah.” I glanced down at the lease papers I had scattered across my small coffee table. “My lease is up at the end of this month. And I wasn’t exactly making the big bucks at Overton before I got laid off. It’s pretty much a paycheck to paycheck situation.

So I can either terminate the lease, or get kicked out a month later once I can’t pay and have an eviction in my history.” “You might find a job by then,” Justin suggested. “I know the software field is tough right now, though.” “I doubt I’ll be out of work more than a couple months,” I said.

“But the layoffs are crazy for now. Even if I picked something up in a couple weeks, I might not get a paycheck for another two or three weeks after that.” “And you don’t want to move back home.” Justin paused. “Or ask your parents for money.” “Hell no.” Justin knew the issues I had at home.
