Cry Vengeance – Ron Handberg

Are you serious? They’re in our fucking foot- steps!” Sarah suddenly remembered Jessica’s phone call and her troubling questions about the Ingram incident. It had struck her as strange at the time, but in light of this, even more worri- some. “Maybe you’re right,” she finally said. “Let’s get the club together and talk about it.” “Screw the club,” Brinkman said. “You heard them the last time. They just want to bury their heads.”
“We’re all in this together,” Sarah argued. Brinkman grabbed her by the arm, wheeling her around. “Look, it’s one thing to have a reporter nosing around, but now she’s got Meecham involved. That’s getting too close to home.” Sarah shook her arm free. “Don’t muscle me, Freda. Get the club together. You can’t go off half-cocked.” Brinkman backed away. “Okay, but it’ll be a goddamned waste of time, watch and see.”
Then she stalked off. essica found Meecham on the same bench by the lake. The ducks were once again gathered by his feet, at the water’s edge, crabbily competing for the pieces of bread he would occasionally flick in their direction. “Sit down, Detective,” he said wearily as she walked up. “We’ve got a lot to talk about, you and I.” Meecham looked as though he hadn’t slept. His eyes were swimming in red, the only color in his face. His skin sagged beneath his cheekbones and around his neck.
His shirt was badly wrinkled, and his suit looked as if it had just come out of the dryer. If he has slept, Jessica decided, it must have been in his . clothes. “You look like you’ve been on a bender,” she said, only half-joking, hoping she was wrong. “No such luck,” he said. “I just have a lot on my mind.”
“Savage Justice captures the taste and the heat and the pres- sure of a journalistic hunt; it’s a complex story of depravity and power that won’t let you go. One of the best first novels I have ever read.” —John Sandford, author of Silent Prey By Ron Handberg SAVAGE JUSTICE CRY VENGEANCE Available from HarperPaperbacks ATTENTION: ORGANIZATIONS AND CORPORATIONS Most HarperPaperbacks are available at special quantity dis- counts for bulk purchases for sales promotions, premiums, or fund-raising.
