Her words, spilling out unplanned, only earned his growl, feeding her fear. The cycle seemed endless. Alaric descended the steps, holding a plate of food. The aroma of sizzling bacon and eggs filled the air. He unlocked the cell and gave her the plate. “Is there any way I can get a change of…” she paused as his eyes became mere slits. “Well, um, well, I need some clothes,” she stammered.

“I have been wearing this for almost a week now.” She looked down at the ground, unable to hold that glare. “I probably smell bad. Which is… well… I’m sure it is annoying and—” “If I get you clothes, will you shut up?” he snapped.

“Yes.” She nodded her head, still looking at the floor. “I’ll get you clothes tonight then,” he stated coolly. Heat prickled her skin, the weight of his gaze a tangible pressure as she tried to find the nerve to look up. Silence hung thick, broken only by her ragged breaths. Is he planning some torture since I talked too much once again?

Will he do to me whatever he had done to my father? Taking a deep breath, she screwed up every ounce of nerve she had. Gathering the courage, she forced her eyes upward, a quick, desperate flicker, but his face remained a blank canvas. She gazed downward, her eyes tracing the lines of her worn shoes. “I want you to understand if you try to run,” he paused, she could feel the exhale of his breath flutter through the top of her hair.

“I will hunt you down. Now come.” Her body tensed, muscles rigid with dread, feet heavy as stone on the cold stairs. Each echoing footfall sounded a death knell, amplifying the churning fear within. Am I finally meeting the same grim fate as my father? They passed through the bright kitchen, then into the vast foyer, the grand staircase looming overhead, before he turned right, disappearing through a doorway. Her feet stilled, mouth agape. Eyes shot up, meeting the soaring ceiling that seemed to stretch to the skies.

A painted night sky mural adorned the expanse above. Gold stars twinkled on a navy backdrop, a silver crescent moon aglow. Shelves crammed the walls, overflowing with books. The scent of aged paper and leather hung heavy. The spines—a kaleidoscope of colors—shimmered and danced, a vibrant spectacle on the shelves. Growing up, she’d only seen two books. Fae visitors had brought them, though she’d never opened them or seen the insides of them. Before a crackling blaze, two worn leather chairs sat, the firelight glinting off their dark surfaces.

A small polished wooden table nestled between them.
