The numbers to the right of and below the grid indicate how many of the squares in that row are filled in with ships or parts of ships. The ships do not touch each other, even diagonally. Some squares have been filled in to start you off. 9 10 1 x Battleship 4 x Submarine 3 x Destroyer 2 x Cruiser CAN you crack the Alphabeater?

It’s a tough twist on our popular Alphapuzzle, designed to stretch your mental muscles to the limit. Each grid number below represents a letter or a black square. As in Alphapuzzle, every letter of the alphabet is used. But now you have to complete the grid too! Use the given letters and the given black squares below the main grid to start.

To add to the fiendish fun, Alphabeater is ‘rotationally symmetrical’. In other words the grid is the same if you turn the page upside down. So, for example if there is a six-letter word Across which starts in the top left corner, there will be a corresponding six-letter word Across which ends in the bottom right corner square.

Every black square has a symmetrical ‘twin’ but the ‘twin’ may not always share the same number. This can help identify other black squares. Of course if the centre square is black it has no corresponding ‘twin’. BY MARK JEFFERIES OPINION: PAGE 14 Nadiya is in new issue of woman&home, inset right SHE has mastered baking and TV present- ing and now Nadiya Hussain is planning to add another string to her bow by becoming a teacher. Since winning The Great British Bake Off in 2015, Nadiya has been on our screens with shows such as Nadiya Bakes, Nadiya’s Fast Flavours and Nadiya’s Simple Spices. But after releasing Nadiya’s Cook Once Eat Twice in 2024 she revealed last year the BBC had “decided they didn’t want to commission the show any more”, which was a “huge turning point”.

So the mum of three has now become a teaching assistant with a view to training to be a teacher. In an interview for woman&home maga- zine, Nadiya said: “I appreciate that it’s an industry, it’s a business and it’s about making money, but I still don’t know [why they’ve let me go] because I haven’t had a conversation with anyone.

There are no answers, no closure.” Nadiya, 41, said when the decision was made she was contacted by other channels, but instead decided to change careers com- pletely. She said: “I’m working as a teach- ing assistant at a lovely little primary school. The plan is to gain some training and maybe in the future become a teacher. “I had to do an application form, an interview, go in and sit in with the kids, and see how they reacted to me. “I did get people ringing me, asking, ‘Sorry, is this actually the Nadiya Hussain?’

and I’m like, ‘Yes, it is and I am looking for a job, and I would like an opportunity.’
