It will suspend sourcing of fresh, chilled and frozen mackerel, which it gets from Scottish waters, by April 29 and will not bring in more tinned mackerel. The move comes as successive governments have been accused of failing to cut catches to levels recommended by scientists, to ensure sustainable fi shing and prevent mackerel stocks collapsing. Jake Pickering, of Waitrose, said: “We are reinforcing our ethical commitments, acting to tackle overfi shing and protect the long-term health of our oceans. “We look forward to bringing mackerel back to shelves once it meets our high standards.”
