But Katherine’s most significant experience, both professionally and personally, came after being runner- up on Dancing with the Stars in 2012. It led to an invitation from tenor Andrea Bocelli to tour the US with him and a concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, where she met her husband. “So what I thought were career highlights became something far more personal.

Those experiences quietly led me to the person I would share my life with.” She married film producer Andrew Levitas in 2014, with whom she has two kids Aaliyah, 10, and Xander, seven. She is most pleased she has brought classical music to those who didn’t think it was for them.

“It always makes me smile when someone tells me: ‘I only listen to you and death metal’. That’s why I’ve taken it into places you wouldn’t traditionally find it: pop venues, sporting events, even war zones. I wanted to meet people where they are.” Performing for the troops is one of Katherine’s greatest sources of pride, although it came with risks. On one of her trips to Afghanistan her helicopter was attacked by a Taliban missile and fell several hundred feet.

She said: “One of the most unforget- table ovations was in Afghanistan. I travelled to Camp Bastion at the start of the war. A stage had been set up in the mess hall for around a thousand servicemen and women in the middle of an incredibly tough tour. “There were funny moments, there were deeply emotional moments but an extraordinary sense of together- ness in the room. When they stood at the end, I had tears in my eyes but not because of the applause, but because I felt I should have been the one standing for them.

For what they do for all of us.” Katherine, who has also performed for Pope John Paul II in 2003 and Pope Francis in 2022, heads out on her 25 Year Anniversary Tour in October. Her 18 dates across the UK and Ireland include concerts in Liverpool, Cardiff, Birmingham and at the London Palladium. Fans will be keen to hear her sing Time To Say Goodbye and I Will Always Love You.

But Katherine admits she still struggles with the acclaim. “I still find standing ovations slightly uncomfortable. I’m deeply grateful for them, of course, but I’ve never been someone who feels entirely at ease soaking up applause.” But she loves still flying the flag for Wales after all these years.

Below, Shona Robison JRF’s Chris Birt said: “The next Scottish Government must prioritise council tax reform to create the fiscal foundations for a fairer Scotland, and why all parties standing in this year’s election must bring forward proposals for major legislative change on council tax.” Finance Secretary Shona Robison said it had held a consultation with Cosla on potential reforms, adding “any future changes must be grounded in evidence, and carefully assessed for their impact on households”.

on all political parties to commit to changing council tax. JRF said more than one in 10 households on the lowest incomes are behind on their council tax bills, while for those in higher value homes it acts as a tax subsidy. Pressure on council budgets means a tipping point has been reached, it claimed.

JRF said it wants a “genuinely propor- tionate property tax”. The call comes as households face big hikes to their council tax bills from April 1.
